Libro Prima edizione
First Edition. An exceptional copy; fine in an equally fine dw, now mylar-sleeved. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered. Literally as new.; 201 pages; Physical desc. : xiv, 201 p. : col. Ill. , map ; 24 x 26 cm. Published in conjunction with the exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, July 21-Nov. 28, 2004. Includes bibliographical references (p. 197) and index. Subject: Olympics in art --Athletes in art --Art, Greek --Athletes --Greece --History --Exhibitions. Summary: As Athens prepares for 2004, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, proudly presents the original Olympics in all their sweaty, heroic glory. Like today, sports were a vital part of daily life in ancient Greece. Games for the Gods unearths the original traditions of athletics, highlighting both the fascinating similarities and the jarring differences between the ancient ways and our own. We might not be used to such Classical customs as associating athletic festivals with certain gods, seeing our athletes compete in the nude, or having them indulge in dirty fighting as accepted practice (then again.) , but the excitement of competition, admiration for athletic skill, and adoration of champions--as well as several of the sports--are just as familiar to fans today as they were to the ancients. The Greek games here come to life in a series of texts that explore the Olympics then and now, the origins of the games and various athletic events, and the ways in which the contests were prepared for and the victors honored. With stunning illustrations of over 140 sculptures, vases, and coins, as well as photographs of modern athletes, Games for the Gods is a unique celebration of the Olympic spirit through the ages. 2 Kg.

Hardcover. Condizione: VG/VG. Rich green cloth, color illus. dust jacket, 197 pp., 110+ color plates, 44 BW illus. The exhibition for which this book serves as catalogue to, included 73 works by this American master. Martin Johnson Heade (1819-1904) had the longest career and produced perhaps the most varied body of work of any American painter of the nineteenth century. His prolific oeuvre ranges from American coastal marshes and marine landscapes to the lush tropical splendor of South and Central American landscapes, birds, and flowers. An independent thinker as well as a world traveler, Heade developed a singular approach to landscape and still life painting, adapting some elements of the style and practice of the Hudson River School to his own more Darwinian vision. While Heade had only a minor reputation in his own day and was completely forgotten for many decades after his death, he is now rightly regarded as an artist of great significance and originality, and as the only American whose landscapes and still lifes are equally important. In this elegantly illustrated book, the catalogue for the second major retrospective of Heade's work in thirty years, Theodore Stebbins and his collaborators focus on the major themes of Heade's work: seascapes, salt marshes, landscapes, tropical landscapes, the "gems" of Brazil (as hummingbirds are known), passion flowers, orchids, and his late work in Florida. There are also chapters on Heade's critics and the development of Heade's painting technique. A perfect companion book to the catalogue raisonne on his works by Stebbins. Seldom found in hardcover.
