In a bungalow high up in the green hills above the plains of Ceylon, under a vast blue sky, live the Ferguson family: Bella, a precocious eight-year-old; her father Henry ? owner of Pitlochry, a tea plantation ? and her mother Virginia. The story centres around the Pavilion in the Clouds, set in the idyllic grounds carved out of the wilderness. But all is not as serene as it seems. Bella is suspicious of her governess, Miss White?s intentions. Her suspicion sparks off her mother?s imagination and after an unfortunate series of events, a confrontation is had with Miss White and a gunshot rings off around the hills. Years later, Bella, now living back in Scotland at university in St Andrews, is faced, once again with her past. Will she at last find out what happened between her Father and Miss White? And will the guilt she has lived with all these years be reconciled by a long over-due apology? * This is a FINE copy of the 1st thus. 1st. Imp. fnl, with no visible faults.*.

Hardback. Condizione: Mint. Barry Fantoni (illustratore). First Edition. This copy is bound in illustrated laminated boards, a dust wrapper is not called for. The text block is unmarked, tight, white, bright and square. International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. Where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased charges will be quoted. A Whole Scene Going On covers Barry Fantoni's working - and sometimes not working - life from his first sell-out one-man show in 1963 through his time at Private Eye and the creativity of the Sixties to 1968 when the decade of pop and fashion gave way to the demo, the Red Brigade and social unrest. The memoir begins with his early days at Private Eye where he first met Peter Cook, and then covers his work as an artist and illustrator, and his film and television career. From teaching Malcolm McLaren at Croydon Art School and writing a song for Marianne Faithfull to finding a harmonium for Paul McCartney and his lifelong friendship with Ray Davies of the Kinks, Barry's account of the Sixties is a wry and observational gem. The players and the parts they played have been chosen for their genuine contribution to a decade that seems more popular now than it was at the time. Ref KKK 7.

Modern Fantasy: Five Studies (1975, published as by C. N. Manlove), which considers at length works by Charles Kingsley, George MacDonald, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien and Mervyn Peake, was written at a time when "no serious study of the subject [of fantasy literature] has appeared". In it he posits a definition of fantasy as: A fiction evoking wonder and containing a substantial and irreducible element of supernatural or impossible worlds, beings or objects with which the mortal characters in the story or the readers become on at least partly familiar terms. He was a lecturer in English Literature at the University of Edinburgh until his retirement in 1993. **Will be well-packed for posting/shipping**. 8vo. **Will be well-packed for posting/shipping**. Following on from the huge success of the "44 Scotland Street" series, Alexander McCall Smith 'moved house' to London's Pimlico and into his brand new daily novel, "Corduroy Mansions". The building itself - described in a guide to the architecture of the area as 'a building of no interest whatsoever' - is believed to have been built as an asylum, or possibly a school, or maybe it was a mansion block - nobody is very sure. In fact, nothing of its history is known, although it does have some nice Arts and Craft features. At the moment it is inhabited by an assortment of characters - including amongst others a literary agent, a wine merchant, one accountant, possibly the first ever nasty Liberal Democrat MP and his long-suffering PA, and a small dog in his prime. At least one character is on a voyage of self-discovery, which has taken him to Cheltenham so far. Although Corduroy Mansions is a nickname, it is now recognized by the Post Office.
