Paperback. Condizione: Fine. First Edition. A fine new copy. 64pp.This handsome small book tells the story of the Spalding Gentlemen?s Society, one of the earliest such learned societies in Britain, founded by Maurice Johnson of Ayscoughfee Hall in 1710 and still in existence today. Nowadays the Society welcomes women as well as men, though in fact women were closely involved in the Society from the outset. It has a long and proud history in the life of this fenland town in Lincolnshire, especially in educational role, and is still providing opportunities for public engagement and academic research on a wide variety of subjects with the resources of its famous library and museum. Included here is also a mission statement on the Society?s plans for the future. The book is lavishly illustrated with 16 pictures, mostly in colour. A feature of the wrapper is an extinct butterfly recorded in the Society?s minutes.

Libro Prima edizione
Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. 1st Edition. A fine new copy. This book is a major contribution to cemetery studies and consists of nine essays and appendices on the history and science and aesthetics of Hardwick Road Cemetery, Kings Lynn, Norfolk. Julian Litten has edited the work and contributed the essays on the history of the site and a glossary of funerary symbolism. He has also co-authored with Neville Posnett a study of the Commonwealth War Graves, and with other authors an essay on the notable burials. Colin Houseman studies the changing history of cemetery regulations and administration; John Lovett and others provide a survey of the trees on the site; Robin Stevenson analyses the mosses and plant life found there; and Rob Gordon and others cover the animal wildlife. Four appendices list rules and regulations in 1898, and undertakers, monumental masons and florists in Kings Lynn between 1849 and the present. Sir Jeremy Bagge has contributed a foreword and there is a generous section of colour plates, maps and diagrams.192 pp, contains 45 illustrations, most in colour.

Libro Prima edizione
Paperback. Condizione: Fine. First Edition. There has only been one other diary of a member of a Labour Battalion in the First World War published, so this new discovery, here published for the first time is of great importance. These men were considered not-quite medically fit for military service, but fit enough for the hard manual work of building railways, clearing roads etc. The title is from the diary, and uses one of the derogatory names given the Labour Battalions by combat troops, yet their work was essential for the war effort. William Henry Thompson came from Cottingham in East Yorkshire and gives an intelligent, honest, revelatory, critical and often heart-breaking account of his experiences in France and Belgium, working very close to the front and witnessing first hand many of the shocking events of the war, from 1915 to 1919 (he was not demobilised till January). The text has been carefully edited in full, introduced and indexed by Katrin McClure of the Cottingham Local History Society and it is illustrated with 32 pages of mostly colour pictures, 128pp.
