Faint mark on right foredge. In 1946, Australian forces were stationed in Hiroshima, tasked with demilitarising and democratising Japan. Noel Huggett was part of the first group of troops to arrive. During Noel's time there, he met and fell in love with a Japanese woman, Reiko (Ruth). This book tells the story of Noel's and Ruth's courtship under the disapproving eyes of the Australian military, the deliberate obstructions they had to overcome to get married and begin a family and the continued denial of Australian citizenship to their firstborn child. At the heart of their problems was the White Australia Policy. Noel and Ruth's story reveals the personal impact of such policies in their institutionalised and social forms and the lack of protection of fundamental human rights afforded to Noel and his family - the right to citizenship and the right to marry.

While other people go to school for their education, John skipped right over that part and ran headlong into his future, getting his education the hard way: straight from life. As a young boy he earned money selling rabbit pelts while living in a bush hut after the family home burned down. He collected bottles from drunks in the street and sold lollies at the local airfield. He did go to school for a while, but only until he could build up a profit table business selling horse manure from his billycart. Then he settled into a job taking care of a horse no one else could handle. Life had already found John, and he was not yet twelve years old. One morning he boarded a train to Sydney without a word to his parents. He found a job and a place to live and survived on his own for four years. One day, as though being led by an invisible hand, underage John signed up for the RAAF. It was 1939 and there was a war on. Soon he was on a ship heading for the Mediterranean - wherever that was. John survived the war - physically - but the mental cost was considerable. He ran from his marriage and his young wife, whom he loved deeply. He ran from his parents, good people who cared about him. For twenty years he travelled the length and breadth of Australia as a hotel cook and mining camp cook/manager. His exploits were legend and his attachments were many, although none were lasting. John has had his share of successes, but his life has also been touched by tragedy. His story - sometimes humorous and sometimes heartbreaking - paints a vivid picture of a man who has lived life to the full. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Personal Memoirs; ISBN: 1921642971.
