This is the fascinating autobiography of a Pole from Krakow who ended up in Africa entirely by accident. His family were deported to Siberia by the Soviets from where they escaped to South Africa via Iran and Aden, before being sent to a refugee camp on the Rhodesian copper belt. After the war, they had a farm at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, until they were dispossessed by the Tanzanian government in the 1960's. In between times, de Pole pursued a career as a professional hunter, pursuing elephants and all the major quarry species of the region. An exciting and fast moving book which concentrates on the first couple of decades of East African independence and the struggle for existence of formerly secure European settlers. .

This book "begins with a first-timer's elephant hunt in East Africa more than forty years ago. That safari, during which C.J. McElroy collected all of the dangerous big five animals that Africa offers, launches Mac's quest to become the most successful trophy hunter of his time. It also opens his eyes to the dangers an international big game hunter can encounter. Over the next four decades, McElroy learns that elephants, rhinoceseros, hippopotamus, tigers, lions, leopards, jaguars, cougars, bears, wild crocodiles and wild oxen are not to be taken lightly. .Few people have experienced what C.J.McElroy experiences in hunting on six contintents. Those adventures, combined with Mac's natural talent as a storyteller, make for extremely entertaining reading." Chapters include; African elephant; African rhinoceros; African hippopotamus; Bengal tiger; African lion; African leopard; jaguar; cougar; bears of North America; bears of Europe and Asia; Cape buffalo; wild oxen of Asia in their new homes; wild swine on six continents; wild canines; Nile crocodiles and other dangerous reptiles. .

Originally published in 1967, this work provides an account of hunting in the days after World War II when game was plentiful. It could not reach the glorious days of the first quarter of the 20th Century, but here there are accounts of the hunting in Africa and told in a way that makes the reader appreciate the color and excitement without the various man-killers which were more plentiful than tribes people or hunters sometimes wanted. An item that has already become scarce. Bound in gray cloth, spine lettered in gilt. A fine copy in near fine pictorial dust jacket.
