Two volumes, tall octavo; size of bindings: 5 3/4 in. x 8 3/4 in. x 1 3/4 in, Volume 1: frontispiece portrait of Colley Cibber; [i]-lxxi, [1]-337 pp.; Volume 2: frontispiece portrait of Cibber; [viii]pp., pp. [1]-416 (including index), + printer's leaf. Both volumes are illustrated with 13 inserted plates with tissue guards, these are mezzotints on India paper, mounted on a thicker paper; engraved by Robert Bowyer Parkes, and 9 etched chapter headings (also on India paper, and mounted at the beginning of the chapters), "newly etched from contemporary drawings by Adolphe Lalauze" (1838-1906), giving a total of 26 mezzotints & 18 etched chapter headings. Bound in quarter, dark brown, morocco leather spines, sides and corner-pieces, by Stikeman & Co., with their stamp on the upper edge of the back of the front endpapers; featuring five raised bands on the spines, with gilt-lettered titling, volume numbers, place and date on spines, single-line gilt borders along edges of sides and corner-pieces; headbands, top-edges gilt, brown paper endpapers. Former owner's printed book labels pasted to each front brown paper paste-down. Spine ends show light wear, with a 1/4 inch chip out of the upper spine end of volume one, wear to cover corners, a few small abrasions to leather outer hinges, sides, spine bands, with a few small spots to spines of both volumes. Interior text and plates are clean. The scan shows the spines and part of the front cover of volume two. Weight: 5 lbs. Postage is extra on this item.

Hand-numbered to the edition page which explains the entire imprint of this work.A scarce publication.An unusually bright copy of this work.With twenty-four subjects total, including some buildings no longer standing in this historic city. One example of a grand building no longer standing is Nassau Grove, which stood on Orange Grove. Orange Grove, and the house were named after the Prince of Orange's visit. The name of the house was given long after the Prince's visit, due to rumours that he once resided there. It was demolished in 1900 to make way for a hotel.Other locations include Bath Abbey, Beau Nash's House, Prior Park Mansion, Pulteney Bridge, North Parade Bridge, In the publisher's original quarter calf binding, with cloth covered boards. Bound in full, dark green morocco leather by The Monastery Hill Bindery [Chicago], with their stamps in the lower margins of the back leather turn-ins. The spines show five raised bands, with gilt-lettered titles, and a design of masks with laurel wreaths, crossed horns, in compartments, with gilt borders and flourishes on the covers; the inner covers feature leather doublures with a central rose leather inlay which repeats some of the flourishes and with a linked design of inlaid dark green leather diamond & spearhead forms, linked and crossed by curving gilt double lines. Facing dark green silk covered endpapers, headbands, top-edges gilt. The spine ends, outer cover hinges, and cover corners show light rubbing to the leather surface. Tissue guards show offsetting of the portrait images. A finely bound set from The Monastery Hill Bindery, the inlaid knotwork borders on the doublures, have a slightly "Celtic", or "Anglo-Saxon" art look. The Monastery Hill Bindery was opened in Chicago in 1906. "Publisher's Preface: The twenty-six portraits in this new edition of Colley Cibber's 'Apology' are all newly engraved. The portraits are copperplate mezzotints, engraved by R[obert] B[owyer] Parkes from the best and most authentic originals, in the selection of which great care has been taken. Where more than one portrait exists, the least hackneyed likeness has been chosen, and pains have been taken to secure those pictures which are likely to be esteemed as rarities. The chapter headings are etched by Adolphe Lalauze, and the subjects represent scenes from plays illustrating the costumes, manner, and appearance of the actors of Cibber's period, from contemporary authorities."
