Libro
Original softcover. Condizione: Gut. IX, 267 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Slightly rubbed, otherwise good. / Leicht berieben, sonst gut. - In this witty and insightful foray into the love poems of Propertius, Tibullus, Catullus, and Ovid, Paul Veyne combines an exhaustive knowledge of the ancient texts with a thorough command of contemporary critical theory to craft a reading whose implications extend beyond the confines of classical poetry into matters of literary theory, aesthetics, and cultural difference. Veyne is concerned with answers to a range of questions that have rarely been asked about the elegies: How was such poetry received in its own time? What aesthetic principles does it reveal? How can the relation between poet and audience in ancient Rome be defined and how does this affect the way this poetry is received today? Against most previous interpretations of the elegiac genre, Veyne contends that the erotic experiences, emotions, and images employed in these poems have little to do with the poets own experiences. Veyne s central argument is that elegy in ancient Rome was a purely artificial creation, a forum for the development of sensibilities. He asserts that cleverness in the use of poetic and rhetorical devices, rather than existential sincerity, was the elegists primary goal. Veyne attributes this aesthetic attitude to the Romans appropriation of Hellenistic culture and argues that the philological tradition has erred in reading these poems as, in fact, autobiographical. - Paul Veyne is professor of Roman history at the University of Paris (College de France). A leading intellectual in France, where he is best known for his study of aristocratic power in ancient Greece and Rome, Le pain et le cirque, he is an editor of and contributor to A History of Private Life. His Did the Greeks Believe in Their Myths? is also published by the University of Chicago Press. ISBN 9780226854328 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 338.
