Libro Prima edizione
(Hardcover, 1987). 1987 1st edition. Oblong folio (395 x 347mm). Ppx,593. Colour and b/w illustrations, maps and charts, folding chart in pocket at rear. Light blue cloth, upper board and spine titled in white, blind-stamped cod motif to upper board. A fine unread copy. The threat of oil exploration and the extension of the United States and Canada's fishery limits to 200 miles in the 1970s led to fisheries and jurisdiction disputes over these productive fishing grounds. These prompted the publication of this massive review of the natural science of the bank. Geology, oceanography, ecology and fisheries in great depth. .

Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. 1st Edition. The MIT Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts and London, England, 1987. Richard Haven Backus (1922-2012) was a prominent biological oceanographer at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. His college years were interrupted by WWII during which he became a B-24 navigator (1st Lieutenant) in the 8th Army Air Force based in England during the intense air campaign over Germany. After an emergency landing in Switzerland, Dick escaped internment to fly again in the Pacific/Japan theater in the Military Air Transport Command. While completing his doctorate accepted a position in 1952 at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) where he worked his entire career. An outstanding achievement during his career was the organization and editing of this multidisciplinary book "Georges Bank" published in 1987 by MIT Press. The depth and clarity of the book's 57 articles and 8 nontechnical introductions will make it useful for anyone involved in oceanographic or ocean policy studies. Sections cover all aspects of this huge marine ecosystem - geology, weather and climate, physical oceanography, chemistry, phytoplankton, primary production, zoology and secondary production, the fisheries, and conflicting uses. Georges Bank is the first major project of the Coastal Research Center of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The book Includes 176 six-color maps, 54 four-color illustrations - 392 charts, graphs, and drawings. This massive book has 593 pages that measure 340mm X 385mm and it weighs over 5 kilograms. The book is bound in light blue cloth, with white lettering and a blind embossed codfish and it is in fine condition. There is a large folded Bathymetric Chart of Georges Bank and Vicinity in a pouch inside the back cover. This is a very scarce, and important book on the critically important Georges Bank that is situated between Maine and Nova Scotia. Additional postage will be required on this book.
