Libro
Condizione: Gut. Hellenistic Culture & Society ; 9. XVI, 293 p., ill. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Slightly rubbed dust jacket, otherwise very good. / Leicht beriebener Schutzumschlag, sonst sehr gut. - Why are scholars looking at the same evidence and coming up with fresh conclusions? During the past decade or two, the Hellenistic Age has come to enjoy extraordinary attention as an area of study. The chief aim of the 1988 conference from which this volume derives was to facilitate an exchange of ideas on Hellenistic history and culture and to make the exchange as stimulating as possible by bringing into confrontation scholars whose opinions conflicted. Unexpectedly, the conference s confrontations revealed not conflict but converging lines of research that formed a new picture of the great variegated Hellenistic mosaic. Today s scholars, unlike their predecessors, have an ingrained distrust not only of totalitarianism but of all ideological politics whatsoever; indeed, even the validity of principles as such is questioned. Egalitarianism and multiculturalism have rendered "elitist" a pejorative term. Feminism, similarly, is undermining traditional male assumptions in a society that also contrives to be more preoccupied with sex than any civilization since that of Julio-Claudian Rome. Such present concerns are reflected in shifting scholarly assessments: the Hellenistic period, once simplistically labeled decadent, is now recognized for some outstanding intellectual and cultural achievements; interest in centers of power has shifted to an interest in events on the peripheries of the Hellenistic empires; the long-ignored technologies of the Hellenistic world can no longer be dismissed as unworthy of study by scholars no less class-bound than their ancient counterparts. The currently fashionable march toward multiculturalism has consciously down graded the Western, Greco-Roman tradition as such, allowing the Nubians, Bactrians, and other subject peoples of the time to interest scholars not just as recipients of Graeco-Roman culture, but as worthy of study in their own right. History, and historians, like Heracleitus river, never stand still: revaluation of the Hellenistic era was overdue. The essays in this volume share a collective sense of excitement and discovery, a sparking of fresh ideas, generated by the sharing of individual explorations. They are a rewarding beginning to the reexploration of a fascinatingly complex age. - Peter Green is Dougherty Centennial Professor of Classics at the University of Texas at Austin. A novelist and translator as well as a scholar, he is the author of many books, including Alexander to Actium: The Historical Evolution of the Hellenistic Age (1990). - Contributors: S. M. In a 1988 conference, American and British scholars unexpectedly discovered that their ideas were converging in ways that formed a new picture of the variegated Hellenistic mosaic. That picture emerges in these essays and eloquently displays the breadth of modern interest in the Hellenistic Age. A distrust of all ideologies has altered old views of ancient political structures, and feminism has also changed earlier assessments. The current emphasis on multiculturalism has consciously deemphasized the Western, Greco-Roman tradition, and Nubians, Bactrians, and other subject peoples of the time are receiving attention in their own right, not just as recipients of Greco-Roman culture. History, like Herakleitos' river, never stands still. These essays share a collective sense of discovery and a sparking of new ideas-they are a welcome beginning to the reexploration of a fascinatingly complex age.
