Cloth with dustjacket. Condizione: Gut. 213 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag bestoßen, weist leichte Knicke und Verfärbungen auf, Schutzumschlag vergilbt, bei einer Seite des Vorsatzes wurde ein Teil heraus gerissen, Seiten minimal angegilbt / dust jacket scuffed, has light creases and discoloration, dust jacket yellowed, one page of endpapers has been torn out partly, pages minimally yellowed. - This book explores the evidence for the poets and poetry of the Hellenic epic tradition in the three centuries from the epoch of Homer to the ascendancy of imperial Athens. Account is taken of recent literary and archaeological discoveries, and, so far as the fragmentary evidence allows, the composers, in speech and in writing, of hexameter verse are related to their local historical contexts. The achievement of Homer s and Hesiod s contemporaries and successors in preserving and developing heroic poetry during the archaic Greek renascence is emphasized. Attention is given to cosmogonical epics and to poems, mostly anonymous, on the legends of Argos, Thebes, Sparta, Athens, Corinth, and north-western Greece. The occasional use of epic poetry as a vehicle for political propaganda is also discussed. In an appendix there is an illuminating comparison between oral poets in early Greece and court poets of medieval Ireland. In sum, the book introduces its readers to a significant, but rarely studied, episode in Greek literary history. Those who have no Greek will be able to use it; and scholars may find much here to interest them too. George Huxley, a Quondam Fellow of All Souls, is Professor of Greek in the Queen s University of Belfast. / Contents Abbreviations Works Cited by Author s Name Only Preface I Theogonies and Theomachies II Phoronis and Danais III The Theban Epics IV Two Mantic Poems V Eumelos, the early Argonautika and related Epics VI Epimenides VII Kinaithon and Asios VIII Earlier Epics about Herakles IX Epic Poetry in Attica and the Theseis X The Kypria XI The Aftermath of the Iliad XII The Returns of the Heroes from Troy XIII The Margites XIV Panyassis Epilogue Appendix: Some Irish Analogies Supplementary Notes Index.
