Jacket vg, has some sunning and wear on spine and a bit of writing in pencil otherwise in nice condition. Arthur Szyk (Polish: ['artur ??k]; June 16, 1894 ? September 13, 1951) was a Polish-Jewish artist who worked primarily as a book illustrator and political artist throughout his career. Arthur Szyk was born into a prosperous middle-class Jewish family in Lódz,[1][2] in the part of Poland which was under Russian rule in the 19th century. An acculturated Polish Jew, Szyk always proudly regarded himself both as a Pole and a Jew.[3] From 1921, he lived and created his works mainly in France and Poland, and in 1937 he moved to the United Kingdom. In 1940, he settled permanently in the United States, where he was granted American citizenship in 1948. Arthur Szyk became a renowned artist and book illustrator as early as the interwar period. His works were exhibited and published not only in Poland, but also in France, the United Kingdom, Israel and the United States. However, he gained broad popularity in the United States primarily through his political caricatures, in which, after the outbreak of World War II, he savaged the policies and personalities of the leaders of the Axis powers. After the war, he also devoted himself to political issues, especially the support of the creation of the state of Israel. Szyk's work is characterized in its material content by social and political commitment, and in its formal aspect by its rejection of modernism and embrace of the traditions of medieval and renaissance painting, especially illuminated manuscripts from those periods. Unlike most caricaturists, Szyk always showed great attention to the colouristic effects and details in his works. Today, Szyk is an increasingly well-known and often exhibited artist only in his last home country, the United States. However, exhibitions in Poland and Germany are familiarizing Europe with one of the most prolific artists of World War II.

paperback. 1st edition. Original double-fold booklet with photo tipped in to front, 4to, 4 pages. Includes selections from the eulogy given by Simon H. Rifkind for Szyk, printed by Sidney Hollaender and given out at the funeral. Hollaender notes on the rear that he is printing this "in appreciation of a colorful friend." See Arthur Szyk Society newsletter, v. 3, n. 1, 2001. In Szyk bibliographies, Hollaender is credited as the printer of Szyk's "Lithograph of Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address;" Hollaender's daughter has indicated that Hollaender and his Ever Ready Label Corp in fact did a great deal of printing for Szyk. • Immagine del venditore per [FOUR SETS OF STAMPS DESIGNED BY ARTHUR SZYK, WITH RELATED LETTER AND PAMPHLETS, SIX ITEMS TOTAL] venduto da Dan Wyman Books, LLC

Paper Wrappers. 1st edition. A group of six items in total, including the following: 1) "They must not die: Save human lives," a brochure containing the Committee's plan of action (rescuing Jews from Axis-controlled countries and aiding those who have already escaped). The back cover states, "The Emergency Committee welcomes this opportunity to reproduce the inspiring creations of the virile pen and the creative heart of Arthur Szyk, in the form of Poster Stamps. The Committee hopes that generous support in contributions for and distributions of these Poster Stamps, will be forthcoming from the American people, to enable it to carry on its emergency mission for the rescue of some four million martyred humans. Let it not be said that the two million who have been exterminated have died in vain." Inside are a folded sheet of Szyk's 5 separate designs showing four scenes of the oppressed Jews of Europe-and, famously, one defiant image of a British Soldier, his machine gun raised in anger, holding a fallen elderly Jewish man. The sheets of stamps inside have adhered together, and we have not tried to separate them, but 2 rows of all five designs are visible. 2) There is a six-panel brochure similarly tilted: "The Shall Not Die - Save Human Lives - They Must Not Die," advertising two other types of stamps: "Help us survive," showing Jewish men breaking away from a swastika made of barbed wire, and a set depicting the Four Freedoms.3) A full sheet of Szyk's well-known full-color depictions, on stamps, of the 4 American freedoms celebrated by FDR in his famous Jan 1941 Speech (Of Speech, Of Religion, From Want, From Fear) 4) A full sheet of Szyk's "Help Us Survive" stamps (adhered together where the sheet was naturally folded in half along the perferations), described in the above brochure, showing a middle aged and older Jewish man fleeing a barbed-wire swastika. 5) A brochure from the American League for a Free Palestine, issued in 1945, titled "There were 4 sons," with nine pages of text updating the story of the four sons from the Passover parable to meet the contemporary situation, followed by four sheets of stamps (one sheet in green, one in purple, one in orange, one in brown) by Szyk depicting the Wise Son from the Hagadah, here dressed as a soldier, with the slogan "For a Free Palestine." This booklet is in very good condition.6) Accompanying these items is a printed cover letter, partly toned, dated September 1944, urging the recipient to use the stamps on the backs of envelopes to draw attention to the ongoing Holocaust, and asking for donations to support the Committee's work. "The Emergency Committee welcomes this opportunity to reproduce the inspiring creations of the virile pen and the creative heart of Arthur Szyk, in the form of Poster Stamps. The Committee hopes that generous support in contributions for and distributions of these Poster Stamps, will be forthcoming from the American people, to enable it to carry on its emergency mission for the rescue of some four million martyred humans. Let it not be said that the two million who have been exterminated have died in vain. The grim stories of Nazi atrocities are true and they cannot be dismissed like a bad dream. Such crimes are a challenge to all civilized persons." (from the inside back cover of "They Must Not Die: Save Human Lives"). In two cases, the stamps have stuck together because of the glue on the rear, otherwise Very Good Condition, all very displayable. Rare Szyk items (ART-28-10-ECC).

Condizione: Good. On offer is a significant, original World War II manuscript relic handwritten by the fascinating, heroic Gregory Meisler a Jewish, Polish Army officer, [noted in the book 'Four Lives of Gregory Meisler: Jew, Warrior and Polish Patriot'] who was born in Lodz Poland in 1900, died in 1953, but in the interim he served with distinction in the Polish army through 1939, was captured by Germans and put in an 'Oflag', a German prisoner of war camp in Murnau Stalag VII [Oflag VII-A Murnau], located in Bavaria in Murnau am Staffelsee where he spent the entire war. The small 1942 pocket calendar from 1942 is in German with Latin and Ancient Roman Months names. Mr. Meisler wrote in Polish and it appears from casual translation that he worked as a Cantin or shop manager, noting financial and cash transaction among his personal entries, special events like Jewish feasts and their dates - Yom Kippur, Hanukah, Purim and Pesach. One entry notes about 400 hundred captives chosen to be Police guards. Some problems with getting staff for the Cantin. Tells about a packet he got from someone, and about relations with another Polish officer. At the back are important addresses; the Red-Cross office in France, Artur Szyk, who was his friend and more. The 12 x 7 cm. cloth softcover has some damage but is complete, no missing pages. With bent edges but overall G. Size: 48mo - over 3" - 4" tall. Polish Language.

First Szyk edition, number 59 of 125 copies printed on vellum, signed by both illustrator and editor, and released for sale in the United States. The most lavishly produced modern edition of the Haggadah, this was Szyk's magnus opus, drawing a striking visual parallel between the Passover narrative of oppression in ancient Egypt and the alarming development of anti-Jewish activities in Nazi Germany. The Polish-born Jewish artist Artur Szyk (1894-1951) was known in the 1930s for his political cartoons, the most famous of which depicted Hitler as an ancient Egyptian pharaoh; his art had become more politically engaged after Hitler took power in Germany in 1933. Szyck's choice of the Haggadah as a new subject, other than the artistic possibilities that it offered, was motivated by the thematic significance of the text as a reminder of past Jewish triumphs over persecution. "While the miniature paintings depict historical scenes, in the text illuminations Szyk has combined figures in historical costume, characters from the east European ghetto, and young Jewish pioneers in Palestine. These figures illustrate a continuum, making the point that the struggle for freedom cannot be relegated to the past but is very much a current and contemporary concern" (Ansell, p. 93). The monumental collection of illustrations took Szyk several years to complete. When he presented the work to potential publishers around 1937, many rejected it; this was partly due to the challenge of reproducing the artist's fine detail and vibrant colours, and partly due to the explicitly anti-Nazi subject matter, as the illustrations depicted the Egyptians, snakes, and other vicious animals decorated with swastikas. However, the Beaconsfield Press was founded by several prominent members of the Jewish community in England with the express purpose of publishing Szyk's project; the corporation was named in honour of Benjamin Disraeli, earl of Beaconsfield. In the final version, the swastikas were removed, but Szyk's message was remarked in the introduction, in which the editor and translator Cecil Roth, renowned historian of Judaism, emphasizes the parallels drawn by the artist between the historical tale and present-day political issues. The book was printed in 1939, then bound and published in 1940. It enjoyed a great success and was hailed by The Times as "worthy to be placed among the most beautiful of books that the hand of man has produced". A further 125 copies, also printed on vellum and signed, were issued for distribution in England. Joseph P. Ansell, Arthur Szyk: Artist, Jew, Pole, 2004; "The Haggadah - A Sumptuous Illustrated Edition", The Times Literary Supplement, 22 Feb. 1941. Large quarto, comprising 118 french-fold leaves.
