Laminated illustrated wrappers, 4to, 152 pp, numerous ills. 855 lots. The first 114 lots are drawn from the large and comprehensive collection of English illustrated books and original book illustrations before 1875 assembled by Edward P. Sine. Among the illustrators represented in this collection are George Cruikshank, Hablot Knight Browne (Phiz), Thomas Rowlandson, John Leech, F.W. Pailthorpe, Henry Alken, William Heath and Thomas Onwhyn. From the catalogue: "The following collection of books illustrated by George Cruikshank (1792-1878) and other important nineteenth-century illustrators reflects the era's predilection for illustration well. It is remarkable, not only for the variety of illustrators represented, but also for the number of important literary works it includes, particularly works by nineteenth-century authors such as Charles Dickens and Anthony Trollope. . This collection is also notable for the number of works it contains which have either survived in their original paper wrappers, or have been preserved in fine bindings by celebrated companies such as Sangorski and Sutcliffe, Bayntun-Riviere and Zaehnsdorf. Many of the books are extra-illustrated with india proofs.". Some prices marked, some text highlighted in yellow, otherwise Good. Printout of prices realized laid in.

First illustrated edition, bound from the original parts, attractively bound. Leech's humorous illustrations and his "caricatured but more modern approach [were] the perfect foil to Surtees's writing. Leech's Jorrocks became part of the national consciousness" (ODNB). Handley Cross was originally published in monthly instalments between March 1838 and August 1839. The first edition in book form appeared in 1843, in three unillustrated volumes by Henry Colburn, comprising only 20 chapters. The present 1854 edition, in 80 chapters, was considerably augmented by the author, who, "not being tied to space or quantity, has had a better opportunity of developing his sporting hero" (Preface). Three issues of the first illustrated edition were published in 1854. This copy, with "Jorrocks's Jounts" in the title and without "Illustrious Leech" in the Preface, can be identified as second issue (see Tooley 473). Tooley 473; Sadleir 3162a; Wolff 6633a. Octavo (208 x 130 mm). Twentieth-century red calf by Bayntun, Bath, spine with raised bands, titles to green and blue spine labels, gilt tooling in compartments, covers bordered with a double gilt fillet, elaborate floral decoration to board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. With 17 engraved plates, all with contemporary hand-colouring, and numerous illustrations in text. Intermittent foxing to contents, otherwise clean; a very good copy.

First edition, first impression, of the first biography of Liszt written in English, handsomely bound. This was Sitwell's best-received and most successful work, which remained in print for over 50 years. Listz is "generally acknowledged as a major interpretative biography, presenting Liszt in his context as a leading figure of the Romantic movement, 'on the same footing of importance as Byron', as Sachie [i.e. Sacheverell] claimed. Although Sachie's old adversary, Ernest Newman, pounced on 'some errors on points of fact' in his Sunday Times review, The Times critic congratulated him on 'a work which will certainly hold the field'. It was a serious approach to the man and his music. Sachie had curbed his tendency to stylistic extravagance to produce a readable and brilliantly presented portrait" (Bradford, pp. 248-9). The book includes a catalogue of Liszt's works and a bibliography. Sitwell was a prolific poet, but "his strength is to be found in his studies of art and literature" (ODNB); he also published works on Mozart (1932) and Scarlatti (1935). Fifoot SA25a. Sara Bradford, Splendours and Miseries: A Life of Sacheverell Sitwell, 1993. Octavo (220 x 143 mm). Near-contemporary green morocco by Bayntun (Rivière), spine with raised bands, compartments lettered and decorated in gilt, covers bordered with twin gilt fillets, board edges and turn-ins tooled in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others uncut. With 16 photographic plates, illustrations in the text. Gilt bright, spine faded to brown, faint foxing to outer leaves, otherwise internally bright and clean. A near-fine copy.

Somerville". The eldest of eight children, Somerville grew up in Drishane, Castletownshend,County Cork, She is said to have dominated her sister and brothers in a family where women were encouraged to be bold. She received her primary education at home, and then attendedAlexandra CollegeinDublin. In 1884, she went toParisfor the first of several trips to study art at theAcadémie ColarossiandAcadémie Delécluse, and then spent a term at theWestminster School of ArtinDean's Yard, Westminster. At home, riding and painting were her absorbing interests. In January 1886, she met her cousin Violet Martin, and their literary partnership began the following year.In 1898 Edith Somerville went to paint at theEtaples art colony, accompanied by Violet. There they profited from their stay by conceiving together the stories later gathered inSome Experiences of an Irish R. M., completed the following year.By the time Violet died in 1915, they had published fourteen books together. Her cousin's death stunned Edith, who continued to write as "Somerville and Ross", claiming that they kept in contact through spiritualistséances. The precise nature of their relationship â " whether they were romantic and sexual partners as well as literary collaborators and friends â " has been the object of speculation by later writers. Somerville was a devoted sportswoman who, in 1903, had become master of theWest CarberyFoxhounds. She was also active in thesuffragistmovement. She had exhibitions of her pictures in Dublin and in London between 1920 and 1938, and was active as an illustrator of sporting picture books and children's picture books. She died at Castletownshend in October 1949, aged 91, and is buried alongside Violet Florence Martin at Saint Barrahane's Church, Castletownsend. (from Dictionary of Irish Biography).

In 1924 Leonard Woolf paid £800 for the existing stock of the British Psychoanalytical Society's library and the Hogarth Press became their official English publishers. It was a huge financial risk and Virginia was "less sanguine than Leonard about the project. She wrote to Roger Fry that she was alarmed at the Press 'having laid out £800 in the works of Freud.' The stock arrived in July 1924 and was 'dumped in a fortress the size of Windsor castle in ruins upon the floor' in the basement at Tavistock Square." (Julia Briggs, Canvas Issue 18).
