Softcover. Condizione: gut. 2001. Zum Fotografen:Richard Avedon *1923 in New York. 1944-1950 Studium am Design Laboratory, New School for Social Research, New York. Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. First edition. Folio. Regarded as a project in photographic history and an expression of the power of photographic art, this book was first published by Thames & Hudson in 1985. In the American West was a landmark in the career of New York photographer Richard Avedon and in the history of photography. It consisted of a series of larger-than-life black-and-white portraits of men and women living in rural America, posing in front of an immaculate white background and gazing intently at the camera. Instead of playing to the traditional myth of the openness and grandeur of the West as the title might imply, Avedon had focused his camera on people who were the antithesis of that myth: miners, housewives, farmers, and drifters. The large prints were mounted onto aluminum and exhibited without glazing, which intensified the gaze of the sitters. Unveiled in 1985 at the Amon Carter Museum, which had commissioned the project, the work was acclaimed and criticized with equal fervor. This paper focuses on the materials employed and the aesthetic choices made by the artist for the printing, mounting, and display of the photographs, and their impact on the long-term preservation of the work. A near fine copy in photo illustrated cloth in the original glassine jacket.

With an essay by Laura Wilson at the back of the book. Not paginated, but approximately 180 pages plus one fold-out image. 11-1/4 by 14-1/4 inches. Hardcover. Condizione: gut. 1985. Regarded as a project in photographic history and an expression of the power of photographic art, this book was first published by Thames & Hudson in 1985. Richard Avedon (1923-2004) was probably the most important fashion photographer of the twentieth century. He had a long and glorious career, working for the likes of Harper s Bazaar (whose art director, Alexey Brodovitch, discovered Avedon working as an advertising photographer for a department store), The New Yorker, Life and Vogue for whom he was the lead photographer between 1973 and 1988. In addition to his groundbreaking fashion work Avedon photographed (amongst others) mental hospital patients, The Beatles, the Civil Rights Movement and the fall of the Berlin Wall. His large format portraits of drifters, miners and cowboys, In the American Midwest, became a top selling book and travelling exhibition and is regarded as an important hallmark in 20th Century photography. His other major books include Performance and Woman in the Mirror. His early life was fictionalised in the 1957 Hollywood musical Funny Face which starred Fred Astaire in the role of "Dick Avery".
