Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. London: Faber and Faber, 1953. First edition. 174pp with 78 photo illustrations on plates. Original cream cloth. Fine with very good slightly chippped d/j. From the introduction: It is about three hundred years since the last aurochs died in the Jaktorowka Forest of Poland. Already the last wild white bull of Britain had probably been killed in the forests of Scotland, although fortunately other members of the breed had by then been safely enclosed in parks, and so escaped total extinction. Just how closely related these two fine animals were has always been a subject of much controversy; and whilst tradition would suggest direct descent, modern opinion places the relationship less close, and gives the wild white cattle of Britain a more recent, yet nevertheless ancient origin. After describing the probable origin and reasons for the colour of the white cattle herds, Mr. Whitehead presents a full descriptive history of all the known herds of white cattle, both ancient and modern, wild or domesticated, that have existed in the British Isles. In recent years the British Whites, which are the polled domestic breed of the ancient white cattle, have become better known. They are rightly included in this book, together with a brief history of each herd that has been entered into the Society's Herd Book since its formation in 1919. Mr. Whitehead's book supersedes the only other book on the subject-Storey's Wild White Cattle of Great Britain published over seventy years ago - and is likely to be the standard work on the subject for many years to come. The text is magnificently illustrated.
