Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. London. Faber and Faber Ltd. 1999, 1987 and 1990 respectively. All are reprints in the very attractive Faber format. Two have the signature faber logo decorating the wraps; 'Ariel' is slightly smaller and a later edition. Sylvia Plath died at her own hand in 1963 and many of this poems have been chosen by Ted Hughes, her partner. A super introduction to some of the best of her poetry. The books have been gently read and are in near fine condition. (a couple of light marks to the front cover of 'selected poems') The posthumous publication of 'Ariel' in 1965 precipitated Plath's rise to fame. 'Crossing the Water' was first published in 1971; fellow poet Peter Porter wrote Crossing the Water is full of perfectly realised works. 'Its most striking impression is of a front-rank artist in the process of discovering her true power'. See seller image for list of poems in 'Selected Poems'. We also have a copy of Plath's only 'novel' The Bell Jar which is semi- autobiographical in stock as new. The covers will be protected with a new inert archival 100 micron sleeve which is removable. Please contact us if you would like any more information or additional images. Postage price quoted outside the UK is for a book up to 1kg using UPS. For books sent within the UK, there will be no extra charge for books up to 2kg which are sent by Royal Mail. Postage quoted in the UK is the actual cost (£3.45). All books are sent in protective packing and custom book box. If your book is intended as a gift, please let us know and we will gift wrap it free of charge with a card and any message.

A near-fine copy handsomely bound in finely woven black cloth stamped with light blue lettering and designs. In an ivory-toned dust jacket designed by Ellen Raskin featuring a quote from Robert Lowell on the front panel; four blurbs on the rear panel; and a black and white photograph of Sexton on the rear inside flap. With the original price of $4.95 at the top of the inside front flap and the date code of "0666" at the bottom. With a small inked fingerprint at the bottom corner of the front panel. Overall, an attractive copy of her poems written in the last months of her life: "Sylvia Plath becomes herself, becomes something imagined newly, wildly and subtly created." Sylvia Plath (1932 1963) was an American poet, novelist, and short story writer. She is credited with advancing the genre of confessional poetry and is best known for The Colossus and Other Poems (1960), Ariel (1965), and The Bell Jar, a semi-autobiographical novel published shortly before her suicide in 1963. The Collected Poems was published in 1981, which included previously unpublished works. For this collection Plath was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in Poetry in 1982, making her the fourth to receive this honour posthumously.[1] Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Plath graduated from Smith College in Massachusetts and the University of Cambridge, England, where she was a student at Newnham College. Plath later studied with Robert Lowell at Boston University, alongside poets Anne Sexton and George Starbuck. She married fellow poet Ted Hughes in 1956, and they lived together in the United States and then in England. Their relationship was tumultuous and, in her letters, Plath alleges abuse at his hands.[2] They had two children before separating in 1962. Plath was clinically depressed for most of her adult life, and was treated multiple times with early versions of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).[3] She ended her own life in 1963. [Poetry] FIRST EDITION, second printing. Octavo (22 x 15cm), pp.86; [2], blank. Publisher's red cloth with gilt titles, typographic dust-wrapper priced at 12s. 6d. Slightly dusty. Near fine in like jacket with a chip to the crown. Shows well. Ariel, written during the year of Plath's suicide, is considered to contain her finest poems. As with all her poetry published after she died, this volume reflects increasing self-absorption and an obsession with death.
Da: Max Rambod Inc, Woodland Hills, CA, U.S.A.
Issue of poetry journal containing Sylvia Plath's last written poems. The Review. Oxonian Press: Oxford, 1963. Includes essay memorializing Plath by the poet A.Alvarez, "She was a tall, spindly girl with waist-length sandy hair, which she usually wore in a bun, and that curious, advertisement-trained transatlantic air of anxious pleasantness. But this was a nervous social manner; under it, she was ruthless about her perceptions, wary and very individual." Journal cover shows black and white photo of Plath. Poems include "Daddy" and "Lady Lazarus." The poems first printed in this journal were written in the last weeks of Plath's life and would go on to make up the posthumous collection Ariel published in 1965. This journal came out 7 months after the poet's suicide, memorializing her death by celebrating her work. A moving textual monument. Very good condition.
