Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Oblong small quarto measuring 11" x 7". Brad-bound red paper boards with silver stamped decorations. Contains 71 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 7" x 9.5" with captions. A photo album kept by Californian, Hugo Steigman, a World War II veteran and pilot while he was involved with air shows and aviation teaching schools just after the war. The album begins with this note by Steigman, "the majority of these pictures were taken at N.A.S. Livermore and old Navy Primary Training base - Fearman's were used by the air cadets there. A.R. McCarty leased the base for glider operations and a school, âThe Rossart Soaring and Gliding School.' These pictures show some of the growth of the school from one plane and glider he taught me to fly and later used me as an instructor. During the summer vacation in 1947 I spent over two solid months living and working at the school. This was without pay. His financial struggles are a monument to the fumbling business man. The jeep served its purpose admirably. It hauled people, gliders, cars, hanger doors, dirt scrapers, scrapers, planes, and did innumerable jobs. "Betty earned her beep." I began flying gliders around late February of 1947 and intend to continue indefinitely." Following this Steigman includes photographs of planes with captions detailing the make and model of each. Other photos include views of the base from the air, the infamous jeep, and photos of his future wife posed on a landing strip. Also included are certificates earned by Steigman including his pilot's license, school bus driver certificate, Boy Scouts of America Scoutmaster card, and his membership card to the Soaring Society of America. According to his obituary he was a "lifetime member of the Order of Daedalians (the national fraternity of military pilots)." A nice collection of aviation photography following an airman's post-war career.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Oblong folio. Measuring 14 "x 11". Black boards with gilt decorations. Contains 57 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 2" x 1" and 5" x 4", with captions and some negatives. Edgewear, a small indent on the front board, and bumped corners, thus very good album with near fine photographs. A young couple's photo album featuring photographs of their wedding and life together. Beverly Keister and Loren Robert Holland were married in the 1940s during a Twelfth Night Ceremony, which is celebrated on the 5th of January 12 days after Christmas. Pictures of the event are in the first part of the album showing Keister receiving gifts and spending times with friend and family. Holland flew jets for the United States Air Force in World War II and many photographs show the air crafts as well as pictures of the landscape from within the cockpit. One picture shows the full interior of the jet that Holland was piloting as well as shots of other planes flying next to Holland's. There are also pictures of Holland while he was at the aviation base playing on both the boxing and basketball team. A few of the photographs show young children, presumably the couple's children greeting Holland, who is wearing a Groucho Marks mask. Another funny photo shows Holland holding and caring for his peculiar pets, a raccoon and a monkey. An interesting photo album of a young couple marrying before the husband went off to fight in World War II.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Oblong quarto. Measuring 14" x 10". Spiral bound purple cloth photo album with "Photo Album" in silver on the front board. A collection of 49 black and white or sepia toned photographs affixed to stiff black paper measuring between 2.5" x 3.5" to 9.5" x 9.5" without captions. All photographs are near fine or better in a very good album with worn edges. The photo album of the "Mohawk" helicopter crew members from the 73rd Aviation Company during the Vietnam War from 1966-1967. The album pictures the men of the 73rd on base in Nha Trang and Vung Tau with aerial photographs that include images of their base. There are images of leisure time with snapshots of volleyball games, and Nancy Sinatra (in high boots) performing during her first USO tour in 1967. Also known as the 73rd Surveillance Airplane Company, or SAC, the company was sent to Vietnam beginning in 1963. According to their website, "the mission of the unit was to support combat operations by performing visual and aerial photographic reconnaissance and surveillance, artillery adjustment, combat command and control, and other combat support operations as required. Over seventy percent of the missions flown were devoted to aerial surveillance." The company "accomplished over 45,000 missions, flying over 43,000 hours." A modest but interesting photographic record of an important company involved in the Vietnam War.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Oblong small quarto measuring 11" x 7.5". String tied decorative cloth with palm tress and "aloha" on the front board. Contains 244 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 4" x 5" without captions. Album is near fine with some edgewear with near fine photographs. A photo album kept by a young couple in Hawaii in the 1930s and 40s. Warren A. Gaboury was a naval pilot from Rhode Island who, according to a newspaper clipping seen here, "dropped his naval wings to work for Pan-American Airlines." The photos show Gaboury and his wife exploring the Hawaiian Islands, enjoying the beach, posed by palm trees, and swimming at a local pool. They are often seen posed around cars and motorcycles as well as visiting a downtown area. They go to an air show and many photos show the couple standing by planes. Some of these photos show photos taken while in flight of planes and landscapes. Later photos show the couple at a ranch and enjoying Gaboury is also seen in his military uniform throughout the album. A newspaper clipping laid in discusses Gaboury's career mentioning how, as stated above, he began as a naval pilot and switched courses to become a commercial pilot of the San Francisco-China run. The article goes on to say, "he likes the pounding surf and therefore has passed up several opportunities to fly for airlines which operate over hill and dale in order to turn his attention to the development of trans-oceanic aerial travel." While commissioned with the Navy he was "assigned to an aerial photographic survey which took him and four companions along the âLine Islands' from Hawaii to Samoa." This was presumably where his interest in photography developed. The article ends saying that next to flying the "subject dearest to his heart is Hawaii" where he had taken up residency. "By the time one listens to his discourse on the beauties of the "Pacific Paradise," he reaches the opinion that [Gaboury] might well qualify for a berth as unofficial representative of the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce." A nice collection of photographs depicting a couple in Hawaii and Gaboury's aviation career.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Oblong folio. Measuring 16½ "x 12½". String tied, black leather boards with embossed and gilt decorations. Contains 270 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 3" x 2" and 10" x 8". The front board and some pages are detached but present with bumped corners, very good with fine photographs. A young couple's photo album of their wedding and the husband's time in the air force circa 1950. Marjorie and Floyd Haskell married before Floyd left to join the air force and much of the album portrays his love for aviation. The first several pages are dedicated to the couple's wedding day with pictures of Marjorie in her dress and getting ready as well as photos of the family members and friends who attended. Much of the photo album after that is of Floyd dressed in uniform posing by army jets and smiling at an Aviation base near Keene, New York. Jets, airplanes, and biplanes are all pictured in the album with different designs and embellishments painted onto the bodies of the planes. Some include pin-up designs and there are pin-up photos later in the album of women in tropical themed outfits. Most of the photos show the full profile of the plane, with shots of the interior cockpit. A couple are aerial shots taken by Haskell while he is piloting his own plane in the air. These include shots of the landscape below, giving a birds-eye view of farms and army bases. Haskell's other company members are included in pictures, some of which are women in uniform at the aviation base. A couple pages are devoted to newspaper cut outs and pictures of a plane crash in which Marcy Airfield's plane instructor, Forrest Cook, crashed and was fatally wounded. Another cut out shows an almost fatal accident during an air show where the pilot was able to parachute to safety. There are photographs of the plane before it had crashed and some of the rubble left over included in the album as well. A few pages show Haskell flying a plane and doing tricks in the air as well as plane acrobatics doing stunts in the sky. Later parts of the album show the Haskell children playing together, dressing up, and growing into older children. An intriguing album filled with aviation photographs from the ground and inside the cockpit taken circa 1950.

Softcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Oblong quarto measuring 11" x 7.5". String tied, black leather over flexible paper boards with "photographs" embossed on the front cover. Contains 344 black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 1" x 0.5" and 5.5" x 3.5" with captions. Light edgewear with strip of paper affixed to the front cover, else near fine. A photo album beginning in 1925 and continuing through the early 1930s from Fort Myers, Florida and North Carolina compiled by Donald E. Hawkins. The album is well captioned beginning with an inscription about the album, "This volume of photographs is dedicated to the joys and sorrows of my youth and those of my intimate friends". There are a couple pictures of the fort base but most of the pictures are of Hawkins and his young friends going to the beach, fishing, and traveling around in their "Trusty Lincoln" to places in the United States and Canada. A few of the photographs have been torn into different shapes, purposefully. Some of the places the group visited were Louisville, Baltimore, Gettysburg, and a few unlabeled areas in Canada. There are also several pages of pictures from the men heading to Crescent Beach, Florida. The beach pictures are humorous featuring shots of the men standing on each other's shoulders, "Those D!!!?! Fools"; Singing and playing a ukulele, "Sweet Adeline"; Spanking another man bent down on all fours, "Just Punishment"; a shot of one of the men without swim trunks, "Oh Gene has lost his pants! Ladies don't look"; and many more. Hawkins also writes about his main hobby, aviation. One of the photos reads, "The most thrilling sport in the world and this is one of my planes built by myself," and several pages featuring planes with a few of them in the process of being built. There are also car wreck photos that Hawkins was involved with, "Four views of that awful wreck with a Wills-ST-Claire roadster, no one was killed but Ralph Hawkin (no relation) has his chest crushed". A predominant amount of the photographs are of the different girls Hawkins dated. Some of the girls are named but the later few are not. Two of his girlfriends Miss Glennie Coman and Miss Francis McTeer are seen the most. However, in the beginning of the book he is pictured with a young girl, Ada Lee, "Apple of my eye" written below the picture. In a series of photographs with him standing next to Ada is, "One of my fill in dates back in '25. I've quit fillin' in now," and another, "You can bet your life this is no fill in". However, written some time after "(We are divorced now)," is written under the caption. An aesthetically pleasing album filled with joyful photographs from a young man stationed in Florida during the late 1920s through to the early 1930s.

  • Immagine del venditore per Album with Thirty-Five Large Gelatin Silver Studio Photos of Paraguay, Presented and Signed by the American Ambassador George L. Kreeck to a Noted Writer Frances Parkinson Keyes during her Tour of South America; The Photos Include Views of Buildings and Sites in Asunción, Paraguay Military Regiments, Portraits of Graduates from the Asunción School of Aviation, Elementary Schoolchildren, Paraguayan President José Eligio Ayala, etc. Ca. 1929. venduto da Globus Rare Books & Archives

Condizione: None. Oblong Folio album (ca. 22x31,5 cm). 17 card stock leaves (with two remaining tissue guards). With 35 mounted studio gelatin silver photographs, each ca. 18x24 cm (7 x 9 ¼ in). All but two photos with printed captions on small paper labels mounted on the photos' lower corners, one photo signed by the photographer in negative ("Máas, Asunción"), two photos with period manuscript notes on the margin or the title label. Period ink presentation inscription on the front pastedown, dated 1929. Period brown full cloth album fastened with a string; paper label with a typewritten title "Paraguay" on the front cover. Binding slightly worn on extremities and loosened on hinges, several mounts with minor creases on extremities, one of the caption labels missing the right part, but overall a very good album of strong interesting photographs. An attractive souvenir album with large studio photos of Paraguay presented to noted American writer Frances Parkinson Keyes (1885-1970) in Asunción during her grand tour of Spain and South America in 1929-1930. The album is signed by George Lewis Kreeck (1882-1945), the US Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary in Paraguay in 1925-1930. His presentation inscription (with the erroneous spelling "Florence" instead of "Frances") reads: "Presented to Mrs. Henry W. Keyes (Florence Parkinson Keyes) by the American Minister Geo. L. Kreeck at Asuncion, Paraguay, 1929." Most photos in the album show various buildings and sites of Asunción, including Palacio de los López, Cabildo or Town Council, city port with several docked river steamers, buildings of the War and Navy Ministry (a corner of calle Palma and calle Garibaldi), Supreme Court, Stock Exchange, "El Paraiso" department store, el Banco Agricola del Paraguay, Plaza Constitucion, Parque Caballero, San Jose Catholic college, Colegio Internacional (with a manuscript note "American school"), Colegio Nacional, Escuela Normal de Profesores, botanical garden, Asunción railway station, National Pantheon of Heroes, private mansions of Cristóbal Perris (Ave. Colombia), Américo Arce (Calle Cerro Corá), and Dr. José E. Pérez (Ave. Colombia), etc. There is also a group portrait of elementary school students and two group portraits of graduates from the Asunción school of aviation (the latter pose on an airfield next to planes). Another photo portrays José Eligio Ayala (1879-1930), the President of Paraguay in 1923-24 and 1924-28. A manuscript ink note, likely made by George Kreeck, reads: "a present Minister of Finance" (Ayala served as Paraguay's Minister of Finance in 1928-1930). Four photos show cavalry and infantry regiments of the Paraguayan army, a company of cadets from the local military school, and a group of French officers hired to train Paraguayan officers. The other photos show meat processing plants near Asunción (Frigorifico San Antonio and Frigorifico Liebig's), piles of treated wood ready for export, and a type of a Paraguayan bull. Overall, a rare collection of large photos of Asunción and Paraguay in the late 1920s. Frances Parkinson Keyes was a prolific American novelist, journalist, editor and biographer. She gained popularity as the author of memoirs "Letters from a Senator's Wife," first published in "Good Housekeeping Magazine" which described her life in Washington with her husband Henry Wilder Keyes, who served as the US Senator in 1919-1937. In 1925-1927, she went on a world trip, travelling from Cuba to Hawaii, South-East Asia, Middle East and Europe, and published articles from her travels in "Good Housekeeping" and "Better Homes and Gardens" magazines. In 1929-1930, she went on another major trip, visiting the Ibero-American Exhibition in Seville and then going around South America (Venezuela, Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, and Chile). Her travel notes were published under the title "Silver seas and golden cities: A joyous journey through Latin lands" in 1931.

Contains 12 sepia-toned silver gelatin photographs measuring between 3½" x 4½" and 8" x 10", without captions. Very good album with near fine photographs. A promotional photo album for the Kohler Aviation Corporation in the 1920s. The images detail the airfield, landing planes, aerial views, and personnel. One photo shows well-dressed passengers posed ascending into the plane. Another image shows mechanics and pilots posed in front of a large bi-plane. The corporation was based in Grand Rapids, Michigan and often flew across Lake Michigan to Wisconsin, ferrying passengers in Loening Amphibian Airplanes, seen throughout the album. This album appears to have been put together for commercial use to market the company. A nice professional portfolio depicting an early aviation company.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Two photograph albums containing relatively early British aviation transport photos. The first album is 8" x 10" green leather-grained cloth with gilt titles and art-nouveau stylized leaf motif. The second is 8.5" x 10" re-backed in brown leather over textured paper-covered boards with gilt titles. Very good or better. The albums contain over 300 photographs of shipping and civil aircraft subjects taken between 1940-1948 presumably presided over by a distinguished gentleman pictured in the uniform of a First Officer of the Air Transport Auxiliary. Most of the images are labeled with the names of the aircraft and locations, some with dates, and include images inside cockpits. Included are a small number of Fleet Air Arm images of aircraft at various locations through the United Kingdom and Europe; Channel Islands, Schiphol, and Lyons. Some photographs include scenes of North East Britain, such as the River Tyne and Spiller's Wharf. Of particular interest among the civil aviation archive are photographs of the Miles Aerovan operated by Air Contractors Ltd, which ran charter freight flights in the late 1940s. They were the first commercial company to transport a British car by air, a later Frazer-Nash car is shown in some photographs. There is also a photo of the company transporting a cow! Other companies featured include, Air Taxis Ltd, Air Charters, and Air Enterprises Ltd, the latter company's machine photographed with actor Basil Radford after the filming of *Whisky Galore!* in 1948. Also featured are photographs of ocean liners, warships, and cargo ships many named and labeled by city of destination, as well as a number of personal photographs. A fascinating archive of civil and naval aviation spanning the latter years of World War II and the early post-war periods, depicting the expanding development of transportation resources.

  • Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Two oblong Quarto albums (each ca. 18,5x28,5 cm). 45 (1 blank) and 25 cardstock leaves. With 486 mounted gelatin silver photographs from ca. 7x11 cm (2 ¾ x 4 ½ in) to 3,5x7 cm (1 ½ in x 2 ¾ ).  All photos with typewritten captions on paper leaves attached or loosely inserted at the beginning of each album, often identifying people, locations, and indicating dates. Several photos with additional pencil captions on the mounts. Both albums with the leaves numbered in pencil by the compiler in the upper corners. One album with over 30 period newspaper clippings mounted at the rear. First album: Period dark green cloth album fastened with a string; front board with a gilt-lettered title "Photographs." Second album: Period black cloth album. Both bindings very mildly rubbed on extremities, a few images mildly faded or with mild silvering, second album with mild staining of several photos, but overall very good albums of interesting photos. Historically significant albums with 486 vernacular photographs of Nebraska, most likely from the family of Hall County's pioneer farmer Charles How and illustrating the rural life of early farmers in Hastings (founded in 1872) and nearby areas (Doniphan, Stanton, Grand Island, Hanson, etc.). "Mr. Howe (ca. 1835-1915) served in the civil war and after the close of hostilities located on the homestead in this county [Hall County] where he lived a quiet industrious life until about four years ago [ca. 1911], when he retired from active work and? [passed the homestead down to his son, Walter]." (Grand Island Daily Independent. 31 August 1915, p. 2.) The albums feature private photos of the How family and thoroughly identified images of other pioneer Nebraska farmers: Stonehockers, Binfields, Schaffers, Sasses, Martins, Tompkins, Lammers, Rainforths, etc. The farmers are portrayed next to their properties (houses, pastures, barns, farms, etc.), amidst livestock (pigs, chickens, turkeys, sheep, horses, and cows), operating the machinery (manure spreader, horse-drawn cultivator, thrashing machine, tractors, etc.), and engaged in various agricultural activities (wood sawing, wheat & hat stacking, kaffir thrashing, corn shelling, etc.). Over 25 views of Hastings show the Burlington Depot (constructed in 1902), A. Jones real estate office, L. A. Kinney & Co wholesale house, Pizer clothing store, Woolworth & Co 5 and 10 cent store, A. H. Brooke's drug store, a Presbyterian church, and other buildings & streets (including Second Street and Hastings Avenue). Several photos depict the Boelus Dam (built in the mid-1910s) in Boelus, cemeteries in Rosedale & Doniphan, a high school in Grand Island, and one of the earliest bank buildings in Hansen. The albums also contain lively images capturing significant moments in Hastings, including Jimmy Ward's "Shooting Star" biplane during an aviation meet (Jimmy Ward was a pioneer aviator who made one of the earliest attempts at transcontinental flight), one of the earliest regional auto shows with decorated cars and drivers in attire, festive circus days with elephant and horse processions, and the 1918 Armistice Day parade featuring dancers and a poignant scene with a stuffed toy of the defeated enemy. Other interesting photos include the views of Wild Cat Mountains, Chimney Rock, Yellow Stone Park, Missouri Valley in Iowa, a train wreck & soap weed in Colorado, "bad lands" in Kansas, etc. Overall, historically interesting albums illustrating the rural and urban life of Nebraska's pioneer farmers.

[8], 157 pp.: ill., 24 ills. (some folding), 2 miniature pennants. 36x27 cm. In original velour binding with silver lettering and the image of an airplane on the front cover and silver lettering on the spine; in original cloth case. Illustrated endpapers. Very good condition, a tear of a transparent leaf (with map affected), p. 107-110 and one insert detached from the block. Most tissue leaves preserved. First and only edition. One of 5,000 copies. Scarce. An early photobook about an expedition of the ice-breaking steamer Chelyuskin, its crash, and rescue mission. Design was produced by Solomon Telingater, Nikolai Sedel'nikov, and Paula Freiberg. All of them are mostly known for their constructivist experiments in book design. The book contains visual materials about the expedition of Chelyuskin (1933-1934) and a camp on an ice floe that the crew had to set up. The expedition was supposed to work out a scheme for delivering cargo along the Northern Sea Route. On November 4, 1933, Chelyuskin reached the Diomid Islands in the Bering Strait and was driven by ice northwards into the Chukchi Sea, from where its ice drift began. On February 13, 1934, Chelyuskin was crushed by the ice in the Chukchi Sea as a result of strong compression and sank. A total of 104 people went out onto the ice. The mission to airlift the Chelyuskinites to safety began on March 5. Pilot A. Lyapidevsky was able to remove twelve women and children from the ice floe. The last flight that brought the remaining crew members to the mainland took place on April 13, 1934. Some pilots were unable to lift anyone from the ground due to the small carrying capacity of aircrafts, but brought food or delivered a doctor to the ice floe. The rescue of the ship's crew from the "ice siege" was monitored by the whole country, reports were broadcast on the radio and printed in newspapers. Finally, the Chelyuskinites reached Moscow by train and were met by young pioneers with flowers. Memoirs of the rescue operation began to appear in Soviet press from 1934 onwards. The first edition dedicated to this topic was the two-volume "A Heroic Epic. Voyage of the Chelyuskin" with the sequel "How We Saved the Chelyuskinites." Together, these volumes contained detailed reminiscences of the expedition members and pilots: A. Liapidevskii, S. Levanevskii, M. Vodop'ianov, I. Doronin, M. Slepnev, V. Molokov, M. Babushkin, etc. In two months and 23 air routes, the pilots managed to transfer 104 people from the "ice siege". The pilots were the first to be honored with the title Hero of the Soviet Union. This particular book includes pictures of the expedition members, a map of the camp, drawings by participants, a folding reproduction of a wall newspaper "We Won't Surrender in Chukchi Sea and on Drifting Ice Floes", diary notes, and two miniature silk pennants. Most photographs were taken by members of the expedition during the winter on the ice floe, but there are also photographs of the meeting of the rescued in Moscow. Some of the photos are mounted, the rest are printed. Among the inserts are three folding leaves. A photomontage composition features pilots' portraits and photos of their airplanes flying above. One folding map shows Soviet Arctic voyages of the 1930s. Another one demonstrates rescue air routes for the Chelyuskinites with the names of pilots indicated. The cover of the book was made from the same material that was used to make the warm clothes of the Chelyuskin crew. The binding color exists in five versions: white, cream, blue, and two shades of gray. The writer Lev Nikulin, who was involved in the publication of "A Heroic Epic," wrote: "When you see how the books about the expedition and the rescue of the Chelyuskinites are made, you feel a certain embarrassment at the thought that your work as a writer is less polished and thorough than that of the superb craftspeople from the Red Proletarian printing shop." Karasik, M. The Soviet Photobook, 1920-1941. P. 352-353. Worldca.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Oblong quarto. Measuring 14" x 9½". Handmade folk art album made of a canvas airplane wing. Contains 85 sepia-toned or black and white photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 8" x 10", some with captions. Very good album with some stickiness from the use of canvas with very good photographs. A World War I-era aviation album handmade with "dope" or canvas from an airplane wing that has been lacquered and compiled by Harold E. Shugart beginning in 1918. The album follows his training at the U.S. School of Military Aeronautics in Champaign, Illinois and later University of Texas, Austin. A large photo shows the Kelly Field Glee Club posed on the back of a truck. Other air fields featured here are McKinney and Love in Texas and Preith and Eberts Fields in Arkansas. Shugart includes numerous well-shot aerial photographs including one of a pilot performing a trick and climbing out of his seat. Others show pilots and mechanics posed on base, planes flying overhead, and plane inspections. Various crashes are featured throughout with planes sticking out of buildings and trees. Additionally included are vaccination records, identification cards, furlough cards, a graduation from the School of Aeronautics certificate, and an aeronautical map of Texas. According to historian Rebecca Cameron, "during World War I, approximately 23,000 volunteers entered flying cadet training. Eight private and state universities offered preflight (ground school) training," this included the University of Texas where Shugart attended. Once they completed the ground training program they were then sent to flight school. Cameron notes, "the aspiring pilot needed six to eight weeks, including forty to fifty hours of flying time, to earn his wings." A wonderful album that documents a firsthand account of World War I-era flight training housed in a unique, handmade album.

  • Condizione: Good. On offer is a sensational, historically significant manuscript and photographic relic of World War II service with the unusual and unique perspective of a 'blue collar' aviation machinist's mate who was employed by one of America's most important and key strategic resources: Pan American Airlines. Harry W. Snyder Jr. was an aviation machinist's mate for Pan American Airways - Africa, Ltd. He created and compiled an absolutely rare and detailed retelling of his work, service, travels and observations and Harry proves to be a sensational, keen eyed diarist. Adding further depth is a scrapbook filled with fascinating images. Of particular interest to historians and researcher to this vastly important historical niche of strategic resource relationships during WWII will understand Pan American's key involvement creating Pan American Airways - Africa, Ltd. in 1941 between. It flew materials and personnel from Miami to South America across the Atlantic to Africa where it crossed the Sahara Dessert onto the Middle East and British India where it flew over the Himalaya Mountains "The Hump" as it was called into China. Harry is in an inviable position to witness history: the diary riod when the United States was just beginning its African campaign. He begins writing in June as he leaves the states and then spends some brief time in South America. His entries begin June 24, 1942 with a final entry Dec 25, 1942. The diary entries mention the issues with Pan American, and how the lines were often blurred between civilian, and military operations. It seems the company in Africa was going to be taken over by the U.S. Army. He also mentions many plane crashes, or "crack ups" as he called them, some with horrible results. An entry from the diary mentions a fighter plane losing control the pilot bailed out, but his parachute failed to open and he dies on impact. His plane blew up on the runway ammunition exploded into the night. This is just one of the entries there are more crashes, air raids, and practice drills (in case the Germans bombed ) having to carry a gun, native troops with tanks, machine guns etc. Snyder also writes about life in the Africa and the West Coast city of Accra (Capital city of Ghana) the bars and other establishments, nightclubs, prostitutes, native people, soldiers there is so much more. In addition to the diary there is an excellent photo album depicting scenes from Accra showing life among the native people, local soldiers street scenes etc. The album contains 71 photos after his service with Pan Am Harry then joined Navy and earned several medals for his service in WW II. Here are some snippets: June 30, 1942 Flight to South America than Africa. Up at 4:45 am breakfast & than to the airport. Plane checked up or 2 guys took off at 7:55 Flew through storms most of the way sighted boat once during break in storms. Over Brazil & hours of nothing but jungle. Some small huts along Amazon River only signs of life. Almost dark when we landed. Just missed a crash when we had to pull up to miss a boat. Circled again and landed at 5:45 pm Raining when we landed. One mans over night hit went overboard & had to be recovered. Took bus to Grand Hotel in Belium. Pera Everyone speaks Portuguese had trouble getting dinner using Mil Res= to about 0.5 took watch tonight and girls ? Both rode the trolley. This is a funny place to write this because I never forget it anyway. The hotel is lousy ants & lizards all over. Lizards will crawl up and down walls. I wrote to Sally & mom to tell them about the lousy dump censors will probably cut out half of the letters. I will tell them again when I get to Africa. I want to get mosquito nets tomorrow; they will cost 100 Mal I hate to go to bed here as I am afraid of getting jiggers or something worse. There are a lot of us sailors here they told us places to go. They are all liquor dives. Went to the "Wonder Bar" Its a wonder all right that anyone can stand it. Beer women don't like either. Wome. Manuscript.

Contemporary photo album in leather binding. More than 210 black and white photos, the majority captioned with typewritten labels. Picture size varies, the majority are 65 × 90 mm; some are up to 180 × 130 mm. . 19 album card leaves with photographs (and 5 blank). 13 unpublished photos of Amelia Earhart in Saint-Louis, Senegal, and a photo of Anita Conti, the pioneer French female oceanographer. Interesting private photo album of a French Colonial commissioner in Africa (Mr. Moiret), with more than 210 contemporary black and white photographs taken mostly in French West Africa. Among them thirteen unpublished photos of the aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart in Saint-Louis; an inscribed photo of Anita Conti the first French female oceanographer; an original photograph of a Senegalese woman used as the illustration of a noted local postal stamp in 1938; besides several images of different aircraft, and various colonial themes. The album starts with thirteen hitherto unknown images of Amelia Earhart taken in Saint-Louis, Senegal (French West Africa) on June 8, 1937, after setting a 13 hours and 22 minutes time record for the 1,900 miles of the eastward South Atlantic crossing from Natal, Brazil to the coasts of West Africa, part of her ill-fated second attempt of circumnavigational flight. Due to navigational errors and the weather circumstances on their South Atlantic crossing from Brazil, Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan missed Dakar, their original destination in West Africa, and landed eventually some one hundred miles to the north in Saint-Louis, Senegal on June 7, 1937. As the arrival to this city was unexpected there was no official press coverage, only amateur photos were taken by the few local French officers who greeted the aviators. Besides the present ones, we couldn't find any other photographic records of Amelia Earhart in Saint-Louis. The photos were taken in the morning on June 8, before Earhart's flight forward to Dakar, showing the aviation pioneer in short sleeve checkered shirt around her twin-motored Lockheed (Model 10E) Electra, and the local French officers. Another important piece of the album is Anita Conti's inscribed portrait. This is the only colored picture of the collection, and it shows the first French female oceanographer with a huge manta ray hanging next to her in a fishing net, among local people in a fishing port. The picture is inscribed in ink: "Pour M. le Commissaire Moiret en grande sympathie Anita Conti 1949". The album contains a copy of the photo picturing a half-naked Senegalese woman, wearing necklaces, and head-carrying a large pot, which image was used as the model of the illustration for a series of Senegales postal stamps published in 1938. The rest of the album consists of images of the funeral of the victims of an aerial accident of the Béarn squadron at Kayes; several pictures of various aircraft; visits of important French colonial officials and a minister: Colonel Jean-Baptiste Marchand(?), Louis Lefebvre (Governor of Senegal) Boresy (commissioner), and Marius Moutet (Minister of the Colonies); lion hunting; different pictures from Saint-Louis, Ziguinchor, Dakar, Pastoria, Kindia, Louga and Kaolack; an explosion of gasoline barrels in Conakry in 1948; and some pictures of Commissioner Moiret and his wife at their home and garden. One photo was removed. Otherwise in fine condition. Contemporary photo album in leather binding. More than 210 black and white photos, the majority captioned with typewritten labels. Picture size varies, the majority are 65 × 90 mm; some are up to 180 × 130 mm.
