He spent 5 years activating the Vandenberg Launch Site in California before the facility was closed following the Challenger accident. Returning to KSC, he supported the recovery of the Shuttle accident and a variety of special projects. During the late 1990s, he was the ground systems lead for the X-33 program. He spent 2003 on the staff of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board, 2004 as staff to the President's commission on the Future of Human Space Flight, and 2005 as the Verville Fellow at the National Air and Space Museum, after which, he returned to KSC. In 2010, he began participating in the Orbiters on Display Working Group that planned the delivery of the Space Shuttle orbiters to their display sites at the NASM; the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum; the California Science Center; and the KSC Visitor Complex. (2011 Biography from NASA publication SP-2011-593. Walter J. Boyne (February 2, 1929 - January 9, 2020) was a United States Air Force officer, Command Pilot, combat veteran, aviation historian, and author of more than 50 books and over 1,000 magazine articles. He was a director of the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution and a Chairman of the National Aeronautic Association. The fastest operational American bomber on the planet, the B-1 has a startling history, and even more stunning technology. In B-1 Lancer, aerospace engineer Dennis R. Jenkins, gives you a compelling close-up of the most complex, sophisticated war machine ever to fly a tactical bombing run. This book takes you aboard the aircraft and show you how it's complex mechanical and electronic systems work. You'll get an insider's look at the B-1's: Futuristic shape and shape-shifting abilities, which make possible extremely low-altitude high-speed flight; Fearsome array of precision-guided munitions, the highest-technology weapons ever mounted in a mass-produced warplane; Advanced defense avionics and the dauntingly complex integration of all systems. More than a breath-stopping exploration of state-of-the-art armaments and flight, B-1 Lancer is a journey filled with behind-the-scenes political intrigue, a voyage of discovery with the top minds in aviation and munitions design, and a combat tour aboard the B-1's missions for the Strategic Air Command, the Air Combat Command, the Air Force Reserve, and the Air National Guard.
