James Mercer Langston Hughes (1902-1967), écrivain et militant du mouvement des Droits civiques, fut une figure majeure du mouvement culturel afro-américain dit de la "Renaissance de Harlem". Il naît dans le Missouri, à Joplin, d une mère professeure. Il suit l enseignement secondaire à Cleveland, y découvre son amour pour les livres et y écrit ses premières nouvelles. En 1920, il entre à l université Columbia mais y subit le racisme de ses camarades de cours et décide de la quitter en 1922. Il s engage sur un navire qui sillonne en 1923 les côtes de l Afrique occidentale et de l Europe, puis réside quelques temps à Rotterdam et à Paris, où il lave la vaisselle au Grand-Duc, rue Pigalle, un club de jazz. Puis il retourne aux Etats-Unis, à Washington, où il rejoint sa mère, et devient l assistant du professeur Carter G. Woodson à l Association for the Study of African American Life and History. En 1926, il écrit dans l hebdomadaire politique "The Nation" un texte intitulé "The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain", qui est considéré comme le manifeste de l engagement artistique noir. Fin des années vingt, il étudie à l Université Lincoln, en Pennsylvanie, où il obtient en 1943 l équivalent américain du doctorat en Littérature. Grand voyageur, il sillonne le monde. Il a publié de multiples recueils de poésies, des pièces de théâtre, des essais, ou encore des scénarios pour le cinéma. Il dépeint dans ses uvres la vie des prolétaires noirs et cherche à montrer l importance d une conscience noire. Dans les années cinquante et soixante, sa popularité s accroît dans le monde mais décline parmi des auteurs afro-américains, tout en restant un modèle pour bon nombre d entre eux. Son orientation sexuelle a fait l objet de débats.
