Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Uncorrected Proof Copy. Yellow card covers, some light shelfwear, one small bump to top of rear cover and some very small marks on covers and edge of text block but otherwise in Very Good condition. Uncorrected Proof of the First UK edition, pp 467. Very Scarce Wallace submitted the novel as one of two undergraduate honors theses at Amherst College, the other being a paper on Richard Taylor's fatalism. He had begun study in philosophy at Amherst, interested in math and logic, and developed an interest in Ludwig Wittgenstein before beginning the novel. A professor commented that Wallace's philosophy writing tended to have the quality of an unfolding story, leading Wallace to explore literature. Having submitted Broom of the System to the Department of English, he decided to focus his career on fiction. Broom was published in 1987 as Wallace completed a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing at the University of Arizona. He had also sold his first short-story collection Girl with Curious Hair, leaving him in an enviable position among MFA students. The book centers on the emotionally challenged Lenore Stonecipher Beadsman, a 24-year-old telephone switchboard operator who questions her own reality. In Wallace's typically offbeat style, Lenore navigates three separate crises: her great-grandmother's escape from a nursing home, a neurotic boyfriend, and a suddenly vocal pet cockatiel. The controlling idea surrounding all of these crises is the use of words and symbols to define a person. To illustrate this idea, Wallace uses different formats to build the story, including transcripts from television recordings and therapy sessions, as well as an accompanying fictional account written by one of the main characters, Rick Vigorous.

Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing of Wallace's debut novel, originally submitted as one of two undergraduate honors theses at Amherst College and eventually published when he was just 25 years old. One of just 1,300 hardbound copies, many of which went to libraries and received the typical library marking treatment. This copy was spared the libraries and remains exceptionally bright with a few remainder marks to the bottom edge of the text block which, in this humble bookseller's opinion, lends it a certain charm. New York: Viking Penguin, 1987. Publisher's original half cloth over blue paper boards, spine stamped in metallic turquoise; pp. (viii), 467. An about near fine copy in a near fine, unclipped dust jacket. Binding remains tight, sturdy and square, minimal wear to boards, light crease to spine with a bit of rubbing to metallic stamping, remainder stamps to bottom edge of text block. Internally clean but for the typically toned pages. Jacket shows just a touch of shelfwear with none of the usual fading to the spine. A very presentable copy, protected in archival mylar.

Signed on the title page without further inscriptions. The ultra rare hardback first edition which had an exceptionally low print run of 1,300 copies only.
