Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Arthur Szyk (illustratore). Limited edition. SIGNED. 550pp. Quarto [27 cm] 1/4 beige leather over illustrated boards. In a slipcase covered with illustrated paper. Navy publisher's topstain, which has faded near the spine. Spine a bit toned; spine ends lightly rubbed. Slipcase also has spots of toning, and a handful of small, closed tears at corners. Textblock is mildly, sporadically toned and offset. Signed by Arthur Szyk on the limitation page. Number 648 of 1500 copies. Arthur Szyk is regarded by scholars and art critics to have been the greatest 20th century illuminator working in the style of the 16th century miniaturist painters. Americans first encountered Arthur Szyk's illuminated manuscripts and political caricatures as they appeared in and on the covers of the most popular magazines during WWII: Time, Esquire, Collier's and advertisements for U.S. Steel and Coca Cola. His subjects were as varied as his uniquely combined styles of renaissance illumination and political caricature: The Declaration of Independence, Nazism, The Passover Haggadah and Book of Esther, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, the United Nations, American Cancer Society, and even coffee, steel and airlines.
