Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. Joseph Schindelman, Faith Jaques, Michael Foreman and Quentin Blake, Sue Gent (illustratore). First Edition/First Printing. One of the most beloved children's stories of the 20th century, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl is a masterpiece of pure imagination. Willy Wonka's famous chocolate factory is opening at last! But only five lucky children will be allowed inside. And the winners are: Augustus Gloop, an enormously fat boy whose hobby is eating; Veruca Salt, a spoiled-rotten brat whose parents are wrapped around her little finger; Violet Beauregarde, a dim-witted gum-chewer with the fastest jaws around; Mike Teavee, a toy pistol-toting gangster-in-training who is obsessed with television; and Charlie Bucket, our hero, a boy who is honest and kind, brave and true, and good and ready for the wildest time of his life! First published in 1964, the dark humor and cheerful gruesomeness of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory immediately endeared the book to children, making it an instant bestseller. Rarely has a tale of morality ever been more deliciously entertaining to read, as Roald Dahl's story warns children and adults alike of the dangers of bad parenting, spoiling children, and self-indulgence. Dahl drew inspiration for the story from his own childhood. In the 1920s, chocolate makers in England would frequently send samples to school children in exchange for their opinions on new products. Two of the largest competing chocolate companies, Cadbury and Rowntree, would send spies posing as employees to discover the other's trade secrets. As a result, the companies became highly protective of their chocolate making process. It was a combination of this secrecy and the elaborate, often gigantic, machines in the factory that inspired the author to write his story. Roald Dahl's classic tale has been adapted into two major motion pictures, Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (1971) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005). In 1971, Dahl wrote a sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, published in 1972. ARTIST EDITION 7" x 10" trim size. 220 Pages. Limited to 1250 copies. Full cloth, smyth-sewn binding with embossed cover. Dust jacket resembling Wonka's Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight candy bar wrapper (the only edition featuring the dust jacket). Full color throughout with over 50 color illustrations by Quentin Blake. 72 additional illustrations from the artists who have illustrated Charlie and the Chocolate Factory through the years: Joseph Schindelman, Faith Jaques, Michael Foreman and Quentin Blake. Over 60 pages of bonus content including deleted chapters, an alternate ending, manuscript pages and handwritten notes from early drafts. 1986 reply letter from Roald Dahl to Paul Suntup. New exclusive introduction by Donald Sturrock, author of the critically acclaimed biography of Roald Dahl. Note by publisher Paul Suntup. Printed offset on archival Cougar Natural. Housed in an illustrated paper covered slipcase featuring wraparound artwork by Sue Gent. Signed by Sue Gent. Bookmark with all pre-orders. THIS COPY IS IN MY POSSESSION AND NORMALLY SHIPS NEXT DAY. Hard Cover. Condizione: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Included. Schindelman, Joseph (illustratore). First Edition. Illustrated by Joseph Schindelman. First edition, second state, with five-line colophon. Publisher's red cloth, with the title in blind to the front board, spine lettered in gilt, black topstain; in the original first issue dust jacket designed by Schindelman, lacking the ISBN number to the rear panel, with illustration of a chocolate candy bar, Charlie, and Willy Wonka to the front panel, and illustration of Wonka dancing in front of billboards to the rear panel. Near fine, with mild dimming to gilt, some toning to foot of spine, a small nick to cloth at foot of spine, and a hint of soiling to front and rear free endpapers; good or better unclipped dust jacket, with light toning to spine and edges, 1 ½" loss to foot of spine ("Factory" missing), shallow chipping to head of spine, light soiling to front panel and front spine fold, a couple of creases to bottom of front panel, lightly nicked corners, and a few small chips to flap folds. Overall, a solid copy of this classic children's story. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a popular children's book, featuring the child protagonist Charlie Bucket, who, along with four others, is awarded the privilege of touring the famous Mr. Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. Joining Charlie on the fantastical tour are some of Dahl's most memorable characters, including the gluttonous Augustus Gloop, spoiled Veruca Salt, gum-chewing Violet Beauregarde, and television addict Mike Teavee. Charlie, a poor and kindhearted child, successfully passes Wonka's unspoken challenge by resisting an unscrupulous offer by a rival chocolatier, winning him a ride in Wonka's glass elevator. Like many of Dahl's child protagonists, Charlie represents purity and honesty in the face of malevolent adults. Charlie's story is continued in the sequel Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator (1972). Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has been adapted into two popular films: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971), a musical adaptation directed by Mel Stuart starring Gene Wilder, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), directed by Tim Burton and featuring Johnny Depp. A prequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory titled Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet in the title role, is set to be released at the end of 2023.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. Schindelman, Joseph (Illustration) (illustratore). First Edition. Scarce first edition with matching original wrapper without isbn number at back. Charming, original illustration throughout this first edition by Joseph Schindelman. Includes the infamous Oompa-Loompa illustrations (excised in later editions). The sixth line in this particular printing appears in a different font and is the sixth line, while normally it is the fifth of six lines. It appears to be printed though, does not seem to be a stamp, and the page itself is not tipped-in; so it seems original, but varying from the standard six-line first issue. Also, in my experience have seen other unexplained variations in the Knopf first, second, and early printings. E. g., the Oompa Loompa imagery and text were entirely altered following the 1964 Knopf first, and second issues with 5-line colophons; but, have actually seen examples with these Oompa Loompa illustrations and accompanying text in early printings with lime endpapers and 4-line colophons. Dark red full cloth boards, embossed title design at front board, gilt spine titles, some shelf, corner wear, rub, discoloration. Pages generally good, some with mostly moderate discoloration; child's semi-decorative pen markings around prefatory endpaper and dedication page. Vintage inscription at front endpaper: "Fred, Merry Christmas 1965," and directly below this: "Debbie, Merry Christmas, 1971." Exterior text block, some discoloration. Mustard endpapers. Bind good, moderate cant; hinges intact. Original dust wrapper, moderate edge wear, rub; clipped, protected in new clear sleeve. A well read, but solid and complete example. Fair to good, intact true first edition in same original wrapper. Concerning the adventures of four nasty children and Our Hero with Mr. Willy Wonka and his famous candy plant. Darkly humorous, slightly creepy, and ultimately the tale of a nice guy who just might finish first, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is one of the prolific Roald Dahl's most popular works. Life changes for a poor but kindhearted boy named Charlie Bucket when he manages to win one of five golden tickets that allows him and a guest of his choice to tour the chocolate factory of an eccentric and reclusive candy inventor named Willy Wonka. On the big day, Charlie and the other visitors are warned to obey all of Mr. Wonka's strict, but rather strange, rules for behavior. What will happen if they disobey? And why has Mr. Wonka allowed them to tour his factory in the first place? Introduces readers to such unforgettable characters as the hardworking Oompa-Loompas, the extremely spoiled Veruca Salt, and, as readers will soon discover, the aptly named Violet Beauregarde. 162 pages. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.
