Juni 1928 in Excelsior Springs, Missouri; 12. Februar 1994 in New York) war ein US-amerikanischer Maler, Bildhauer und Architekt. Er gilt neben Robert Morris (1931 2018) und Sol LeWitt (1928 2007) als einer der Hauptvertreter des Minimalismus, der sich Mitte der 1960er Jahre in New York entwickelt hatte. Nach dem Abgang von der High School in New Jersey diente Judd 1946-47 in der U.S. Army bevor er 1948 seine Studien am College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, aufnahm. Im darauffolgenden Jahr wechselte er zur Columbia University in New York, wo er 1953 cum laude mit einem Bachelor der Philosophie abschloss. Im selben Zeitraum belegte er auch Mal- und Zeichenkurse an der Art Students League. 1957 kehrte er zu Columbia zurück, um ein Master's Studium der Kunstgeschichte unter Meyer Schapiro und Rudolf Wittkower beginnen. Von 1959 bis 1965 arbeitete er als freier Kritiker für die Kunstzeitschriften Art News, Arts Magazine und Art International. Als er als Künstler bekannt wurde, hatte er sich als Kunstkritiker, durch die intensive Beschäftigung mit europäischer und junger amerikanischer Kunst, bereits einen Namen gemacht. Judd begann seine Laufbahn zwar als Maler, wollte aber nicht, dass seine Bilder nur an der Wand hängen. Anfang der 60er Jahre integrierte er gefundene Objekte in zweidimensionale Werke, um Tiefe nicht nur durch Illusion zu erhalten. Tatsächlicher Raum ist wirklich aussagestärker und spezifischer als Farbe auf einer flachen Ebene." Als er 1962 sein erstes freistehendes, dreidimensionales Objekt erschaffte, verließ Judd die Malerei und postierte in der Folge einfache Boxen aus Holz ohne Podest im Raum (so wie bereits Alexander Rodtschenko am Anfang der 1920er Jahre). So wurden sie zu Elementen des Raums, wirkten direkt auf ihre Umgebung und veränderten diese. Judds Gruppierungen aus Kuben und Quadern, die als Boden- oder Wandstücke konzipiert waren, wurden berühmt. Trotz strenger Klarheit" der Arbeiten entstanden Wechselwirkungen von offenen und geschlossenen Volumen, Innen- und Außenformen, transparenten und kompakten Oberflächen. Judds Kunst aktiviert Zwischenräume, die Architektur des Ortes und die Wahrnehmung des Betrachters. In einem 1965 veröffentlichten Essay mit dem Titel "Spezifische Objekte"[1] bezog sich Judd unter anderem auch auf seine eigenen Werke und seine Absicht, damit etwas zu schaffen dass weder Malerei noch Skulptur war. Durch Einschnitte und Streifen gelingt es ihm Raum ins Bild zu bringen und durch die Verwendung von reduzierten, geometrischen Grundformen" aus industriellen Werkstoffen", erschafft er eine Ästhetik der in deren Kargheit. Ein Kunstwerk sollte für ihn als Ganzes zu begreifen sein und nicht als Addition einzelner Blickpunkte. Klarheit, Objektivität, Ordnung und Unordnung sowie der Verzicht auf Komposition waren wichtig, ebenso Material, Raum, Farbe, Volumen und Licht als Aspekte des täglichen Lebens. 1968 erwarb Judd in Manhattan ein fünfgeschossiges Haus in der Spring Street 101 aus den 1890er Jahren. Die aus Gusseisen errichtete ehemalige Textilfabrik nutzte er als sein Atelier und als Wohnhaus für sich und seine Familie. Es ist heute der Sitz der Judd Foundation und kann (nach einer Totalsanierung 2013) besichtigt werden. Seit den 1970er Jahren lebte der Künstler vor allem in Marfa, Texas, wo er Land und mehrere Gebäude erworben hatte und mit Hilfe der Dia Art Foundation den Museumskomplex der Chinati Foundation gründete, um fern vom Kunstbetrieb sein Werk und das befreundeter Künstler exemplarisch zu präsentieren. Im Jahre 1990 eröffnete Judd ein Atelier in Köln. Er schrieb auch für die Kunstzeitung Artforum und ist der Verfasser dutzender Essays und Statements über Kunst, den Kunstbetrieb, Architektur, sowie sozialer und politischer Themen.
