Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. First English Language Edition. ** QUITE RARE ** 1ST ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDITION ** CLOTH-BOUND HARDCOVER WITH DUSTJACKET ** CLEAN AND STAIN-FREE ** NOT A LIBRARY BOOK ** Published by the MIT Press, 1985, 1st Edition in English, octavo (8vo), with 96 total pages (xxvi + 70). First published in German in 1922, this is an important book, by a controversial writer, who is still influential and much read today. A clean, bright, and stain-free copy of the book itself, that on first glance looks like a brand new book, sturdy cloth binding is still crisp and fresh as new. BUT NOTE: Previous owner's name and date on blank front page, underlining and some margin notes on 11 pages in Chapter 2 only, with very faint age speckles to the top exterior page edges, book has no other notable flaws, otherwise would be Fine. The book is square and straight, quite firm and tight in its binding, no pages are loose, torn, folded, creased, or missing. The hinges are sound and undamaged, the corners sharp and unbumped. All pages are clean and stain-free, still bright and white, and all text is sharp and legible. The dustjacket is a bit ragged, with wear and some closed tears at the jacket edges and corners, and a tear on the jacket spine, near the bottom, with some paper loss. However, the jacket remains quite clean and stain-free, and is still basically intact. This 1st English edition is very hard to come by in any condition. Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. First Edition. Some sunning on spine & a few edge tears on jacket, otherwise in very nice condition. In this, his most influential work, legal theorist and political philosopher Carl Schmitt argues that liberalism's basis in individual rights cannot provide a reasonable justification for sacrificing oneself for the state. This edition of the 1932 work includes the translator's introduction (by George Schwab) which highlights Schmitt's intellectual journey through the turbulent period of German history leading to the Hitlerian one-party state. It also includes Leo Strauss's analysis of Schmitt's thesis and a foreword by Tracy B. Strong placing Schmitt's work into contemporary context.
