A tightly fitting cork from a wine bottle. The corkscrew was invented in the seventeenth Century, the original design being based on a device used for withdrawing a ramrod from a gun barrel, and since then inventive minds have produced thousands of different versions.- The student of corkscrews will derive pleasure not only from their technological ingenuity but also from the elaborate decoration applied to some examples' In this book Evan Perry traces the history of corkscrews; he illustrates many different ones and explains how they work and how they were made. He also covers other kinds of tools made to open bottles sealed with types of cap or stoppers other than corks.## ## Shire Books by Bloomsbury Publishing, a book publishing company based in London, England, and formerly by Shire Publications Ltd. and Osprey Publishing. Shire offers low-priced, concise non-fiction paperbacks on a wide range of subjects. Shire books cover antiques and collectables, motoring and rural history, archaeology and Egyptology, architecture, industrial history and many other topics.## ## They were founded in 1962 by John Rotheroe, the company based in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire. The first book published by Shire Publications was Discovering East Suffolk, a 24-page guide to the county through a series of five motoring routes and a gazetteer of the main towns and villages. They were given away to visitors via coach operators, local churches and tourist information points. The book was successful, and Shire publishers decided to sell the second edition because free copies were being sold, setting the template for the future of Shire. Over the following years, Shire expanded its Discovering series and launched several new series, including Lifelines, Shire Albums, Shire Archaeology and Shire Egyptology. ## ## In 2008, Shire began a revamp of its list. It announced that the former Shire series, including Life Lines, Shire Garden History and History in Camera, would be absorbed into a new series called Shire Library, which would retain and expand on the numbering system used by the old Album series, which has long formed the backbone of the Shire Library. ## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. Soft Cover Full Gloss. Condizione: As New. No Jacket. ### Shire Publication - Corkscrews and Bottle Openers by Evan Perry 1998. No.59 in Shire Album Series ### ## THIS BOOK: Classified as: AS NEW: A new style Shire book, dated 1998 EDITION. First published 1980, reprinted 1985, 1989, Second, revised 1995, reprinted 1998. Glossy coloured laminated cover. No bumping, maybe a minor amount of shelf wear. The spine is tight, and the inside is immaculate. Slight crease in cover ## ## Corkscrews and Bottle Openers - Corkscrews appeal to collectors who appreciate the functional beauty of an instrument designed for a specific purpose, namely, to remove a cork from a wine bottle. The corkscrew was invented in the seventeenth century, the original design being based on a device for withdrawing a ramrod from a gun barrel, and since then thousands of different versions have been produced. This book traces the history of the corkscrew, illustrates many different ones, and explains how they work and how they were made. It also covers other tools used for opening bottles sealed with various caps or stoppers. ## ## Corked containers full of wine fifteen hundred years old have been found, with the wine still drinkable. These containers had bungs of wood or cork from the bark of the evergreen oak tree of the Mediterranean region. ## ## A considerable amount of physical effort is required to draw a cork well and by the lace eighteenth century keen brains were working at easing this chore. It has been estimated that between 1795, when the first patent was granted to Samuel Henshall, and the beginning of the twentieth century, over three hundred British corkscrew patents were issued. ## ## The prohibitionist Andrew Volstead is ridiculed by a few different American corkscrews, which portray him in an insulting likeness. These are much sought after by collectors. ## ### YOU MAY FIND THIS INFORMATION INTERESTING - Read on ## ## This is a new style of the Shire books, much more information, and the binding is in full colour glossy. The printing is much clearer on better quality paper, which will mean longevity in the years to come. Newer subjects and updated earlier Shire publications made it an exciting step forward. ## ## In 2007, the company was acquired by Oxford-based military history publisher Osprey and operated from Osprey's offices in Oxford. During 2008 Shire began a revamp of its list. Shire announced that several former Shire series: including Lifelines, Shire Garden History and History in Camera, would be absorbed into a new series called Shire Library. Retaining and expanding the numbering system used by the old album series, which has long formed the backbone of the Shire Library. Books in the Shire Library were to have a new series cover design, as would reissued books in the Archaeology and Egyptology series. Shire further announced that Shire's list of forthcoming publications would include an increased number of new titles, as well as reissues of out-of-print titles and new editions of existing titles. In December 2010, Osprey Publishing, along with all the Shire titles, was acquired by Bloomsbury Publishing. ## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. FREE SHIPPING IS UK ONLY.
