September 1942 in Montclair, New Jersey) ist eine US-amerikanische Schriftstellerin. Sie ist Autorin von Kriminalromanen, die in ihrem Wohnort Venedig spielen. Nach dem Studium in ihrer Heimat und in Siena sowie Perugia unterrichtete sie Englisch und englische Literatur. Anschließend arbeitete sie als Reisebegleiterin in Rom, als Werbetexterin in London und unterrichtete später an amerikanischen Schulen in der Schweiz, im Iran, in China und in Saudi-Arabien, wo sie wegen der Weigerung, sich bei ihrer Lehrtätigkeit zu verschleiern, nicht mehr arbeiten durfte. Zuletzt war sie an der Außenstelle der Universität Maryland auf dem US-Luftwaffenstützpunkt Vicenza tätig, bis sie sich ausschließlich der Schriftstellerei widmete. In Deutschland ist sie eine der erfolgreichsten Bestsellerautorinnen. Auf ihren Wunsch hin erscheinen ihre Bücher nicht auf italienisch, damit die Venezianer, von denen sie ihre Geschichten und Anregungen hat, weiter unvoreingenommen mit ihr umgehen. Im Jahre 2003 erhielt sie den unter anderen vom Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels (Landesverband Bayern), der Bayerischen Staatskanzlei und dem Bayerischen Rundfunk getragenen Internationalen Buchpreis Corine in der Sparte Belletristik. Ihre Leidenschaft gilt der Oper, nach eigenen Angaben besucht sie fast jede wichtige Inszenierung in Europa. Besonders mag sie die Werke von Georg Friedrich Händel. Die Brunetti-Romane: Der Held in Donna Leons Kriminalromanen, die seit 1992 in einem regelmäßigen jährlichen Rhythmus erscheinen und stets die deutschen Bestsellerlisten anführen, ist der Venezianer Commissario Guido Brunetti. Der melancholische Polizist und Sympathieträger Guido Brunetti leidet darunter, das Böse nicht aus der Welt schaffen zu können. Seine Frau Paola, Tochter eines Conte aus der Familie Falier, einer der ältesten Familien Venedigs, arbeitet als Professorin für englische Literatur (ähnlich der Autorin selbst) und ist vom Geist der 68er-Bewegung beseelt. Ihre heranwachsenden Kinder Raffaele und Chiara entwickeln in den Romanen stets einen menschenfreundlichen Enthusiasmus, der mit der korrupten und grausamen Welt des Verbrechens kontrastiert. Als komische Figur der Romane fungiert der ungeschickte, eitle und unfähige Polizeichef Venedigs Vice-Questore Patta, der meistens anderer Meinung ist als Brunetti und sich auch nur selten einsichtig zeigt, wenn Brunetti am Ende den Fall auf seine Weise aufgeklärt hat. Weitere Hauptfiguren sind der loyale und umweltbewusste Sergente Vianello (seit dem elften Roman Ispettore und mit Brunetti per Du) und die moderne, attraktive Computerspezialistin Signorina Elettra, die seit dem dritten Roman Pattas Sekretärin ist. Als weiterer Kontrapunkt zu diesen Figuren tritt Sergente Alvise auf, der sich trotz eigener Beschränktheit, dem Hang zur Vorschriftenabhängigkeit und gelegentlichem Übereifer einer gewissen Wertschätzung seitens des Vice-Questore erfreut. Donna Leon nimmt aktuelle Themen, wie sie in den Zeitungen diskutiert werden, in ihre Romane auf. Einige Beispiele dafür: Bestechung in der Bauverwaltung, Umweltskandale, Rauschgiftverkauf an Jugendliche, Umgang mit Asylanten, Sextourismus oder sexueller Missbrauch von Kindern durch Geistliche. Brunetti findet immer den Täter und seine Hintermänner. Die Hintermänner kommen immer ungeschoren davon, weil sie über ein weitreichendes Beziehungsgeflecht verfügen. Manchmal kann auch der Täter nicht bestraft werden, weil raffinierte juristische Winkelzüge ihn als unzurechnungsfähig hinstellen. Kritik seitens und an der Autorin: Neben dem eigentlichen Kriminalfall sind es einerseits das Familienleben des Romanhelden und andererseits die korrupten politischen Verhältnisse in Italien, die in den Romanen als Thema miteinander verwoben werden. Einige Kritiker werfen daher Donna Leon nicht nur die Pflege von Stereotypen etwa die bekannten" Gegensätze zwischen Nord- und Süditalienern oder die bösen" (unsympathischen, nazi-belasteten) Deutschen vor, sondern auch die melodramatische Aufblähung der Handlungsführungen, in denen die Schilderungen des alltäglichen Familienlebens die Krimi-Plots in den Hintergrund drängen. Doch aus dem Gegensatz zwischen der Kernfamilie, die für die Werte des guten, zivilisierten Verhaltens steht, und dem Staat, den er zu repräsentieren hat, speist sich die Melancholie des Polizisten Brunetti: Der Staat fördert die Kriminalität der Mächtigen, unter deren Druck der Rückzugsraum der Familie stetig schrumpft. Donna Leons Texte beklagen gleichermaßen den Verfall des herkömmlichen (beispielsweise an Henry James geschulten) Erzählens wie die Zerstörung tradierter Werte. Sie stellen sich so in die Tradition der Jeremiade, die in den USA noch besonders lebendig ist. Venedig: Donna Leon beschreibt Venedig in ihren Romanen so detailliert, dass sämtliche Schauplätze mit Hilfe eines Stadtplanes genau recherchiert werden können. Mittlerweile sind ein Stadtplan und ein Brettspiel erschienen, welche die Schauplätze der Brunetti-Romane zum Thema haben. Gleichzeitig ist auch die venezianische Küche immer wieder Thema in ihren Romanen, wobei die Protagonisten meistens selber kochen und zu Hause essen, anstatt Essen zu gehen. Die Dachterrasse ihrer Wohnung liegt am Zusammenfluss von Canal Grande und Rio di San Polo. Auf der anderen Seite des Rios fällt der Blick auf die Terrasse des Palazzo Barbarigo della Terrazza. Fernseh- und Rundfunk-Adaptionen: Die meisten ihrer Romane wurden für das Fernsehen verfilmt und für den Rundfunk als Hörspiel inszeniert. Alle Bücher sind bisher auch als Hörbücher erschienen.
