This translation was first published in hardcover by Dutton in 1972. This is the first paperback edition. Mass Market Paperback. Jorge Luis Borges (1899 1986) , was an Argentine short-story writer, essayist, poet and translator, and a key figure in modern Spanish language literature. His work embraces the "character of unreality in all literature". His best-known books, Ficciones (Fictions) and The Aleph (El Aleph) , published in the 1940s, are compilations of short stories interconnected by common themes, including dreams, labyrinths, libraries, mirrors, fictional writers, philosophy, and religion. Borges's works have contributed to philosophical literature and also to the fantasy genre. The release of Borges' 'A Universal History of Infamy' may be considered the beginning of the 'Magical Realism' movement in Spanish literature. (Historia universal de la infamia) . Borges is at least an influential predecessor of the movement. His late poems dialogue with such cultural figures as Spinoza, Camões, and Virgil. In 1933, Borges first published the pieces later collected as Historia universal de la infamia) in 1935. The book includes two types of writing: the first lies somewhere between non-fictional essays and short stories, using fictional techniques to tell essentially true stories. The second consists of literary forgeries, which Borges passes off as translations of passages from famous but seldom-read works. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; xiii, 154 pages.
