First edition. Green cloth. Very good copy, tiny bit of wear at upper corners of spine, spine a bit less brightly green in comparison to the boards, wrinkle in cloth at base of spine running diagonally across publisher's name, three short lines of black soiling on back board, white speck in lower part of front board. Small owner's last name "Stewart" in upper right corner of front free endpaper; we believe this is Donald Ogden Stewart, having seen his signature before and comparing it with other examples. Overall a very decent copy. Illustrated with photographs by Therese Mitchell. Mitchell's first book.

First Edition of the author's rare first book. Very good or better in a slightly trimmed dust jacket with a fingernail-sized chip at the foot of the spine and some smaller chips and short tears. A collection of short pieces from his days as a reporter for the New York World-Telegram, the New York Herald Tribune and The New Yorker, it has been said that Mitchell would not allow this book to be reprinted in his lifetime due to some racial characterizations that are now considered inappropriate. Even though this may have been the case, Mitchell's writing, while never precious, could hardly be considered insensitive. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.
