Libro Prima edizione
Soft cover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Large paperback, first edition, book is almost entirely of finely printed b + w photographs. Condition: this is an older paperback and there is soiling to the covers and curling at edges and corners; some translucent stains at bottom cover, page edges; some general reading wear. Spine is holding, but a paperback of this size, and age, is delicate and should be considered fragile. An uncommon monograph.

Milestone in the history of photo books: Andrew Roth, The Book of 101 Books, page 196/197; Martin Parr, Gerry Badger, The Photobook, volume 1, page 18. Condition: Cover with little trace of use, no defects. Inside excellent; no marks, no foxing, no creases, no tears, strong binding. Overall very fine condition! Collector`s copy! Scarce first printing! Bruce Davidson began photography at the age of ten in Oak Park, Illinois. He attended the Rochester Institute of Technology and Yale University and was later drafted into the army and stationed near Paris where he met Henri Cartier-Bresson, one of the four founders of the renowned international cooperative photo agency, Magnum Photos. After military service, in 1957, Davidson worked as a freelance photographer for Life Magazine and in 1958 became a full member of Magnum Photos. From 1958 to 1961 he created such seminal bodies of work as The Dwarf, Brooklyn Gang, and the Freedom Rides. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1962 to photograph what became a profound documentation of the Civil Rights Movement in America. In 1963 the Museum of Modern Art in New York presented his work in a solo show. In 1966 he was awarded the first grant for photography from the National Endowment for the Arts, and spent two years bearing witness to the dire social conditions on one block in East Harlem. This work was published by Harvard University Press in 1970 under the title East 100th Street and was later republished and expanded by St. Ann s Press. The work became an exhibition that same year at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1980 he captured the vitality of the New York Metro s underworld that was later published in his book Subway and exhibited at the International Center for Photography in 1982. In 1995 he photographed the landscape and layers of life of Central Park. Davidson continues to create classic bodies of work from his 50-year career that have been extensively published in monographs and are included in all the major public and private fine art collections around the world.***************Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Masachusetts. 1970. Pictorial Boards. Condizione: Fine. First Edition. 48pp, 28 duotone illustrations. Text in English and German. "What you call a ghetto, I call my home. This was said to me when I first came to Harlem, and during the two years that I photographed the people of East 100th Street, it stayed with me". Bruce Davidson's first book "East 100th Street" which surveys the harrowing state of life in Harlem in the late sixties is one of the classic volumes of Post-War American photography. This elegantly produced hardbound catalogue was issued in conjunction with a 1999 Koln gallery exhibition of twenty-eight of Davidson's arresting "East 100th Street" images. A brand new, most handsome example of this uncommon item (whose 1970 Harvard University Press predecessor is cited on page 18 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II", pages 260-261 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", page 26 of "From Fair to Fine: 20th Century Photography Books That Matter", pages 196-97 of "The Book of 101 Books", and pages 46-49 of Fred Ritchin and Carole Naggar's "Magnum Photobook: The Catalogue Raisonné") additionally BOLDLY SIGNED "Bruce Davidson" in black ink on the title page along with an adhesive label bearing the photographer's New York address and phone number affixed to the inside rear cover. Signed by the Photographer. Photography Monograph.
