London [1971], Hart-Davis. Black cloth, very good, dj., 319p index, appendix, 4 maps, 16 b.w. photos. The East India Company's activities in Asia. Covers the acq- uisition & rule of India. It ruled over nearly one-fifth of the world's population. Possessed its own army & navy, its own civil service, and its own church. It became the great- est military power in Asia and had a venue larger than that of Great Britain itself. The story of London merchants who in their persistent & dogged quest for trade with the East, struggled with misunderstanding and suspicion, rivalry with the French & the collapse of the authority of Indian Emper- ors. The company brought the brilliant military conquests of men like Robert Clive & Warren Hastings & the acquisitions of Sir Stamford Raffles and men who spent their entire care- ers in its service. The story of triumph, adventure, disast- er, loyalty and pride, spanning more than two hundred years.
