Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. "Embers" a novel by Hungarian author Sándor Márai, was originally published in Budapest in 1942. This translation by Carol Brown Janeway was first published by Alfred A Knopf in 2001, marking its first appearance for American readers. This is the Sixth Printing, issued in March 2002. It is a near-fine copy with negligible signs of handling. Sándor Márai was one of the leading Hungarian authors in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. ferociously anti-fascist he was able to survive World War II, only to find himself harassed by the Communist government. He exiled to the United States in1948, living there until his death by suicide in 1989. This book is only one of many that are planned for translation. **************************************************************** Excerpted from the jacket write-up : "The rediscovery of a masterpiece of Central European literature, originally published in Budapest in 1942 and unknown to modern readers until last year, "Embers" is an extraordinary novel about a triangular relationship, about love, friendship, and fidelity, about betrayal, pride and true nobility. Ina Castle at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains, an old aristocrat waits to greet the friend he has not seen for forty-one years. In the course of this one night, from dinner until dawn, the two men will fight a duel of words and silences, of stories, of accusations and evasions, that will encompass their entire lives and that of a third person , missing from the candlelit dining hall - the now dead chatelaine of the castle. The last time the three of them sat together was in this room, after a stag hunt in the forest. The year was 1900. No gam e was shot that day, but the reverberations were cataclysmic. And the time of reckoning has finally arrived . Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Good Plus. First Edition. The extremely scarce true first edition in Hungarian of one of the most surprising bestsellers of recent years, translated into English as Embers. This novel was unavailable in Hungary for 50 years and, with a print run of just 5000 copies, the first edition has never been easy to find, even in Hungary. With the upsurge of international interest in Marai's work, and in this book in particular, it is now fair to class copies of the first edition as rare. In the publisher's full, light tan linen, lettered and ruled in chocolate brown with the author's initials in pink to front cover, slate grey endpapers. The flat-back binding has contributed to the disintegration of most copies of this book. Over the past twenty years of dealing in Hungarian literature about a dozen copies of this key book have passed through my hands and the present copy is one of the best preserved I have seen. Foxing to covers and page edges with some signs of handling but still sound and internally very clean.
