Extremes rubbed,esp along spines, a little bumping to spine ends, ex Meadville Theology Liby, usual faults ow interior VG, overall G/ndj: [4]+136+203+ [c]xij index pp [the index is 12pp] +2 text woodcut illus.There are three title pages to this book; the first notes that this volume is for sale in Paris at 2 locations: the printer Pierre Didot l'Ainé and the bookseller Firmin Didot. There follows a pricelist for different paper versions, ranging from 1 to 9 francs: N.B. states that the same edition but minus the Poem of Adonis and without the essay, 2vols in one on ordinary paper, is also available for 1 franc; this latter is evidently the one before us and offered here obviously rebound from the original paper binding. This particular brown marbling is to be seen on several different edns of the fables of about this same vintage, so perhaps was on offer as an addon. Fontaine was a widely read 17th-century author, rivaled only by Aesop himself. His stories composed originally for the education of the crown prince proffered lessons on morality for children and adults alike. Many were adapted from classical sources like Aesop and Phaedrus.

Contemporary mottled leather, sides ruled with french fillet, flat spines ruled and decorated in gilt, each with red morocco label, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, green silk ribbon page-markers, all edges gilt. Engraved vignettes to each title-page. Lightly rubbed, two small wormholes to upper joint of volume 1 and to lower joint of volume 2, contents pristine and firm, generally a very good set.

Remarqué pour la beauté et la qualité des éditions sorties de ses presses, l'imprimeur François-Ambroise Didot (1730-1804) est chargé par Louis XVI, en 1783, d'éditer un choix des "principaux auteurs nationaux et latins" pour former une collection d'ouvrages destinés à l'éducation du Dauphin. Vignette de titre aux armes du Dauphin. Né en 1781, le dédicataire de cet ensemble, Louis-Joseph, atteint de tuberculose s'éteignit en juin 1789, mais la collection fut cependant continuée.
