Paperback. Condizione: Sehr gut. Reprint. 272 p. In very good condition. - Sehr gutes Exemplar. - From the preface: Four hundred years ago, on September 24, 1541, Paracelsus died in Salzburg. He died misunderstood by the world, em- bittered, and poor. With him went one of the most forceful personalities of the Renaissance. -- Born near Einsiedeln toward the end of the year 1493, Philip Theophrastus Bombast von Hohenheim, who later called himself Paracelsus, was the son of a physician. His father Wilhelm von Hohenheim was the impoverished scion of a noble family of Suabia. He had married a Swiss girl and practised medicine on the pilgrims' road that leads to the Benedictine Abbey of Einsiedeln. Thus Paracelsus grew up ih the mountains of Switzerland until the family, in 1502, moved to Carinthia where the father had accepted a position as municipal physician of the mining town of Villach. -- Paracelsus wanted to be a physician like his father. He studied the arts, possibly in Vienna, then medicine in Italy at the University of Ferrara. But he was thoroughly dis- appointed with the instruction that was given at the time. From his father he had learned to see nature with his own eyes, not through the medium of books, and he had learned much biology with him. In Villach, laboring in mines and smelting works, he had acquired a thorough knowledge of chemistry. And now, in Italy, he found that there was too wide a gap between science and the Graeco-Arabic theories that were still the foundation of medicine. He was a rebellious spirit, at that time already hard-headed and stubborn. Since he could not find at the university the enlightenment he was seeking, he looked for other teachers and started on a voyage of discovery which, with short interruptions, was to last until his death.
