Hardcover. Condizione: VG+. Condizione sovraccoperta: VG. David Shepherd (illustratore). 1st. Johnnie Johnson, who reached the rank of Air Vice-Marshal in the RAF, was that service's top scoring fighter pilot of WWII. With this book he made the switch from fighter pilot to aviation historian, proving equally capable as a writer, as he was as a flier, by producing this history of combat aviation from its fledgling days in the opening rounds of WWI through to the 1939-45 conflict and up to the Korean conflict, in which he also served while on exchange from the RAF to the USAF. His first eight chapters cover the rapid development of air fighting during WWI, two more relate progress made in the inter-war years, including the establishment of the Luftwaffe and the role of RAF Fighter Command. A dozen chapters record different phases of WWII in the air, including the Blitzkrieg in Europe, the Battle of Britain, Malta and the Desert Campaign, the bomber offensives and the Korean air war. The final chapter, "Hindsight," summarises the evolution of combat aviation from the flimsey wood, frabric and wire machines of 1914 to the introduction of jets by the Luftwaffe, Kamikazes by the Japanese, to the fast jets in Korea and the coming of supersonic fighters. First edition of 1964 from Chatto and Windus, 290 pages including index, frontis and three other full page colour paintings by David Shepherd plus his 12 full page mono plates.37 intext sketches and diagrams. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG+, small ink name on FFEP, text block otherwise excellent. Colour art price clipped DJ is VG with short tear top front fold also top rear adjacent hinge, few chips or nicks.
