Washington, B'nai B'rith Books, 1993. xv, 423 pp., Fine copy. Hardcover with dustjacket. Essays on Eliezer Berkovits, Eugene B. Borowitz, Emil Fackenheim, Irving (Yitzchak) Greenberg, Abraham Joshua Heschel, Louis Jacobs, Yeshayahu Leibowitz, Gershom Scholem, Elie Wiesel and many others. The past quarter century has been a dynamic phase in the evolution of Jewish scholarship. First-class minds of all denominations have continued to wrestle with both old and new issues confronting the Jewish People. The Holocaust, the continuing development of the American Jewish community, and the growth of the State of Israel have been the causes of ferment in Jewish thought. In the present collection of original essays, each examining the work of one of the foremost thinkers of our time, an attempt has been made to describe and analyze this diverse conceptual scene. Ranging over the wide geographical expanse of the Jewish People, from Israel, through Europe and on to America, this volume offers the most current, comprehensive, and sophisticated introduction available to contemporary Jewish thought.

Condizione: Sehr gut. XV, 423 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Slightly rubbed, overall very good and clean. / Leicht berieben, insgesamt sehr gut und sauber. - The past quarter century has been a dynamic phase in the evolution of Jewish scholarship. What is most impressive about the present effort is that each contribution not only provides competent exegesis of the thought of the individual thinker under review, but also offers serious and meaningful criticism of what is living and what is dead in his work. The contributors to this volume are distinguished scholars, experts on their subjects. Accordingly, these essays, insofar as philosophy and theology advance through criticism, are significant contributions to the ongoing conversation which is contemporary Jewish thought. - Steven T. Katz is Professor of Jewish History and Thought in the Department of Near Eastern Studies at Cornell University. He received his Ph.D. from Cambridge University in 1972, and in 1991 became the first Jew ever to be awarded a Bachelor of Divinity Degree by Cambridge University. Before coming to Cornell he taught at Dartmouth College for more than a decade, and he has also held visiting teaching appointments at Yale, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of California at Santa Barbara, William and Mary, and the University of Lancaster (England). A prolific author, Professor Katz has edited and written many important works in various areas of Jewish thought and comparative mysticism. Among these are: Jewish Philosophers (1975); Jewish Ideas and Concepts (1977); Post-Holocaust Dialogues, which won the National Jewish Book Award in 1984; Historicism, the Holocaust and Zionism (1992); Mysticism and Philosophical Analysis (1976); Mysticism and Religious Traditions (1983); and Mysticism and Language (1992). He is also the editor of the prize winning journal Modern Judaism. At present, he is completing a three volume study entitled The Holocaust in Historical Context which will be published in 1993. - Contents: Foreword -- Michael Neiditch -- Introduction by Steven T.
