First editions, first impressions, each work signed by the author on the front free endpaper. The trilogy is Horsfall's account of service with the Royal Irish Fusiliers and London Irish Rifles during the Battle of France, Tunisia, and Monte Cassino; it is accompanied by a signed copy of The Iron Masters of Penns, a history of his family firm. Colonel John Coldwell-Horsfall (1915-2006) was a highly decorated officer who played a key role in the retreat to Dunkirk, defending key bridges over the river Dendre: "A believer in aggressive forward defence, Horsfall impressed on his men the importance of killing the enemy at the earliest opportunity. His positions on the south side of the canal had great success throughout the ensuing battle, enabling the remnants of the BEF to pass through" (Telegraph obituary). He similarly distinguished himself in North Africa and Italy, a platoon commander describing his bearing under fire - "as unconcerned as if on a stroll in the park". His Telegraph obituarist describes a tall man "of aristocratic bearing, he generally wore a peaked cap, only donning a steel helmet when leading an attack". Horsfall left the army to save his family firm, Webster and Horsfall, a manufacturer of Atlantic cable, mining ropes, and many types of industrial wire. He refused to take a salary until the company was back in profit, a goal he achieved a year later in 1947 due to his programme of modernization. In 1971 Horsfall wrote The Iron Masters of Penn, to commemorate the company's 270-year history. Obituary in The Telegraph, January 2007. Four works, octavo. Trilogy: original green cloth, titles gilt to black faux labels to spines. With pictorial dust jackets. The Iron Masters of Penn: original red cloth. With pictorial dust jacket. Trilogy: 2 photographic frontispiece, one folding photographic frontispiece, 35 similar plates, 15 maps, folding map. The Iron Masters of Penn: illustrated coloured frontispiece, 28 plates, illustrations to text. All plates printed recto and verso. Ownership label of one Anne Spiller next to the price on all jackets. Trilogy: Extremities rubbed, spine slightly cocked, edges soiled: jackets unclipped, spines sunned, panels soiled, chipped and bumped: very good copies in good jackets. Iron Masters: Cloth lightly stained, edges soiled: jacket unclipped, front of jacket neatly reinforced with translucent tape, spine sunned, edges nicked: a very good copy in good jacket.
