12mo, pp. 216 + hand-coloured frontispiece. Untrimmed in original cream boards printed in black. Offsetting from frontispiece to title-page. Boards soiled, extremities bumped, spine rubbed and defective to foot with glue repair to head. Despite the title-page this is the second edition of this parody of Rokeby, and the first edition with the coloured frontispiece. Per Todd and Bowden it was published on the 23rd of July, only six months after the first publication of Rokeby, and a month before the fifth edition of Scott?s own poem was published. Tegg may have been inspired by the original?s popularity to cheat his edition statement - but if he did so he was only following the lead of Ballantyne and Co., who had reissued the sheets for their second edition of Rokeby with a new title-page calling it the third edition some months earlier. Todd & Bowden 496S[2].

8vo, pp. [iv], 224; a fine copy, uncut in the original printed boards, both spine and covers a little worn, but generally in exceptional condition. First edition of this popular satire on Scott's Rokeby, published earlier the same year. The author of this poem was swimming against the tide when he asked in his preface: 'When one man writes nonsense why may not another? And if that man's nonsense has met with such an extraordinary sale as the newspaper puffs infer, why not his imitator hope for the same success?'. Scott's success, however, just continued to grow: the following year he moved to new territory with his first historical novel, Waverley, and conquered new heights of popularity. This burlesque is by John Roby (1793-1850) and was his first book: he became a successful banker, but was also a gifted musician, botanist and lecturer on the traditions and history of his native Lancashire. He seems in fact to have been genuinely admiring of Scott, as some of his later poems show the distinct influence of Scott's poetry, but this time without burlesque or satire. The present copy preserves the original covers, and thus also the advertisements for other contemporary works produced by Thomas Tegg of Cheapside, London, including an edition of Paradise Lost, Young's Night Thoughts, and a complete Shakespeare in 36 numbers. Todd & Bowden, Scott, 497S [1]; Jackson, Annals of English verse, p. 369.
