Nota preliminar por Antonio Portnoy. 18 x 12 cm.; 255 pp. Es dudoso todo lo referente a este fiel escritor que, queriendo escribir un aviso para comerciantes tratantes en mulas, escribió una magnífica obra clásica geográfica y viajera, dando el itinerario, pintoresco y exacto, de Buenos Aires al Perú, según esta relación que se publica en España el año 1773. Ventura García Calderón buscó en archivos, y con su sabia erudición buscó por todas partes antecedentes de aquel sagaz trotacaminos que dijo llamarse Calixto Bustamante Carlos Inga, alias Concolorcorvo, extraño mote que se debe a que por su color de indio, color de ala de cuervo, recibió ese seudónimo. Su obra era muy rara de encontrar y era como papel moneda, ya que la edición primitiva había sido impresa por la Compañía de Billetes de Banco de la Nación Argentina. Como si fuese un Villarroel y con eco de los Lazarillos célebres, hay algo de picaresco y desenfadado en este viaje de ciego con toda la vista. Los países que describe el chistoso viajero -que se dice emparentado con personajes de España y con descendientes de los Incas- son el Uruguay, la Argentina, Chile, Bolivia y el Perú, habiendo también algunas alusiones a México, país en el que había estado antes Concolorcorvo. Se sospecha, por la amenidad y la donosura de este libro, que el que se envuelve en tan exótico seudónimo fuese un escritor letrado, y más cuando recurre al latín o a la orada imagen. La descripción de la América de entonces es un prodigio de detallismo y de luminosos paisajes, mostrándonos los indios pampas, los correos, los caminos, las carretas, los gauderios, los tambos, los lavaderos de oro, la producción de la coca, los obrajes, las danzas de los indios, las minas de azogue, el Potosí, los limeños y los mexicanos, hasta la anécdota de las cuatro P.P.P.P. de Lima. Todo está contado con sencillez y divertimiento, coincidiendo con muchas fiestas y desprendiéndose una amenidad de turismo antiguo, más lento que el moderno pero más cercano a todas las cosas. Concolorcorvo es buen pintor y un buen psicólogo, y se le ve coleccionar recuerdos para contar cosas a sus contertulios, allá, en la España a que fué a morir, como el maestro de indianismo, el Inca Garcilaso. En el mapa de colores que presenta al disfrazado de cuervo, la República Argentina merece unos capítulos vivaces y llenos de datos, que tienen hasta cantares ilustrativos.
