Libro
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. "The Martin library, though long renowned for ornithology as well as for collectors' favourites like Melville, Proust, and George Sand, also comprised the best collections ever assembled of such obscure ultra-romantics as Senancour , and W. H. Hudson, whose dozen or so books on birds led to the fabled library of ornithology - Preface." About 900 lots. Many illustrations throughout, many full-page, some in colour, foreword by Cecil Y. Lang, unpaginated, 4to., lots 2554-3345, orig. gilt lettered dark green cloth, illustration mounted on upper side, good. The large volume catalogues Bradley Martin's impressive English literature collection, with extraordinary highlights, such as Beckford's unpublished correspondence, a Betjeman collection which amounted to an archive, signed and inscribed copies of the Brownings' privately printed first books. Unpaginated (approximately 500 pp), profusely illustrated including many full page plates (some in colour), 792 lots (2554-3345 ) This part of the sale comprised Bradley Martin's superb collection of English literature from the 16th to the 20th centuries. From the introduction: "As it is impracticable to list "highlights", since almost every other item is one, let us mention just the William Beckford collection which spreads over 16 pages of this catalogue and includes nine first editions of one kind or another of Vathek/ An Arabian Tale, a dozen other titles by Beckford or from his library, and no less than 353 autograph letters from Beckford (1830-34) written from Bath to William Clark the Younger." The preliminary brochure had drawn attention to "Monuments of English literature from the sixteenth century to the present, including a fine copy of the first edition of More's Utopia, inscribed copies of Robert Browning's Pauline, Elizabeth Browning's Battle of Marathon, and Keats's Lamia, as well as fine first editions of Spenser, Austen, Trollope, the Brontes, Sterne, Fielding, Swift, Eliot, and Joyce."
