Soft Cover. Condizione: New. Third edition. The lute, ch'in or guqin is one of China's oldest and most revered musical instruments. Records indicate that it has been a favourite of the literary classes for more than 2,500 years; Confucius himself was a great lover of the instrument. Over the centuries, it became representative of the life, taste and pastimes of the Chinese literati. In addition to its contributions to solo and orchestral musical arrangements, a wealth of symbolic meaning accrued to the lute over time. Not only was knowledge of the instrument reserved for the literati; its study was believed to be conducive to meditation and to facilitate intellectual enlightenment. While a significant body of literature has been written on the lute in Chinese, the present monograph is the first to assemble a broad picture of the instrument and its cultural significance in English. The author, a renowned Sinologue and linguist, studied the playing of the instrument under one of the most famous lute masters of his age. xx, 290 pp., incl. 39 b&w plates, 8 woodcuts, index. Size: 24 x 17 cm.

First edition in book form, first printing, fascinating association copy, with the ownership signature of the Zen spiritualist and philosopher Alan Watts on the front free endpaper. In June 1990, his library was donated to the California Institute of Integral Studies, where he had taught for many years; the institute's attractive commemorative bookplate, incorporating the design of Watts's personal bookplate, is below his signature. The Lore of the Chinese Lute, copies of which were issued in both cloth and wrappers, expands with new appendices on a four-part essay of the same name published by Robert van Gulik in consecutive issues of Monumenta Nippnonica, the journal of Sophia University, between 1938 and 1940. Van Gulik's first book, it presents the history, cultural associations, symbolism, and rituals of China's most important musical tradition. Today, it remains the most authoritative work on the subject in English, and was recently listed in China as one of the most significant foreign works dealing with Chinese culture. It is hard to overstate the contribution made by Watts (1915-1973) to the European appreciation of Asian culture and philosophy in the post-war period. Through his books on Zen, eastern spiritualism, and sexuality, he became "one of the best-known and most influential "gurus" of the spiritual awakening that occurred in the 1960s" (ANB). Provenance: ink stamp of "Alan Watts Library" and initials "AW" on title page; California Institute of Integral Studies accession bookplate, incorporating the design used in Watts's personal bookplate, and reading, "this volume is part of the Alan Watts Collection donated to the California Institute of Integral Studies by the Zen Center of San Francisco and the Alan Watts Society for Comparative Philosophy. June, 1990", together with the institute's ink stamps, record card holder stamped "discarded", and traces of shelf label. Quarto. Original orange cloth, spine lettered in black, front cover with title in Chinese in black stylistic characters and black vignette of lute and other scholarly accoutrements. Colour frontispiece after a Ming dynasty drawing of a Chinese scholar with his lute, 16 plates, folding table showing historical evolution of Chinese lute tradition, illustrations in text. Cloth sunned with some wear to spine ends and extremities, faint circular impression on front board, small split to cloth at foot of front joint, text toned, plates bright. A very good copy.
