Also with original cardboard shipping box and packing material, giving complete protection, ensuring that solander box is pristine. Written and illustrated on parchment c. 1320 1340 for Sir Geoffrey Luttrell (d. 1269/70), lord of the manor of Irnham in Lincolnshire, it is 'one of the supreme expressions of Gothic, an international style here imbued with a distinctly English character' (Brown, Commentary, 1), remarkable both for its intimate connection to its patron - members of the Luttrell family are depicted in its pages at prayer, preparing for battle, and feasting in their hall - and for its record of ordinary rural life. It is one of the most extensive collections of images of medieval England, depicting the everyday activities of both wealthy landowners and agricultural workers, interwoven with images of the the sacred and the profane, or at least grotesque: 'a bizarre, ghoulish, terrifying, amusing array of hybrid creatures' (Brown, 2), created from 'a variety of textures (.) phosphorescent, rubbery, metallic, velvety and vegetal' (Camille, 2013, 232), the hybrid creatures inhabiting the Psalter's margins are by and large, especially on later pages, not stock images of familiar grotesques but 'in many cases, unique' (Camille 238). Many of its marginal illuminations are 'word-images playing upon individual phrases, words or syllables' of the text, tying word and image closely together and linking the biblical past with the 14th-century present, offering a 'temporal continuum' which 'links past, present and future: its images seek not only to depict fourteenth century realities but also to explore eternal meanings' (Brown, The World of the Luttrell Psalter, 2006, 57). Michelle Brown's Commentary volume here offers both an historical introduction to the Psalter and a page-by-page commentary on its contents. A spectacular and assured Folio Society facsimile production of one of the most celebrated of medieval manuscripts, lavishly illuminated with over 400 decorated borders, in new condition. No dustwrappers, as issued. ~Robust packaging. All UK orders with tracking, overseas orders on request. Size: 309 + 206pp. Binding sound, text unmarked.
