Octavo, sooftbound (slick, full-color illus. stiff black wrappers), 112 pp. Highlighting; otherwise, Very Good. From lower cover: Throughout her career as a medieval historian Eileen Power was engaged on a book on women in the Middle Ages. She did not live to write the book but some of the material she collected founds its way into popular lectures on medieval women which she was called upon to give on several occasions. These lectures, previously unpublished, are brought together in the present book. The opening chapter deals with the medieval theories of the woman's work and her place in the world. The other chapters deal with the lives which women of different types actually led. They give a vivid account in Eileen Power's inimitable style of the lady, the peasant, the townswoman, the nun. A chapter on education surveys the schooling available to girls, as well as the subjects and skills that were taught, and analyses the evidence for the literacy of women. The lectures have been edited by Professor Postan and the text is supplemented by illustrations chosen from contemporary manuscripts and works of art. European History, Women's History, Women's Studies, Medieval Europe. xslic.
