Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. As "Lewis Padgett", Catherine L. Moore and her husband, Henry Kuttner, wrote four "Baldy" stories about teenage mutants in 1945. In 1953 Gnome Press collected those four stories plus a new "Baldy" novelette in the fix-up novel "Mutant". Offered here are TWO editions of "Mutant": a 1953 Gnome Press first edition hardcover in very good condition featuring a C. L. Moore signature, PLUS a 1963 Ballantine 1st US paperback edition in near fine condition. The Gnome Press book has "First Edition" on its copyright page. Glued to its front end paper is an index card that was signed by Catherine L. Moore in the 1980s for the Old London Bookshop in Seattle WA. The book's binding is sound, with a little spine lean. The blue cloth-covered boards are unmarked and unfaded, with light wear at top and bottom of spine and on corners. The pages have some light stains and a little foxing around edges of the text block, and in the margins of a few pages. Otherwise the pages are unmarked, and have almost no age toning. The price-clipped dust jacket, now protected by a removable mylar cover has light wear at top and bottom of spine and on corners, plus some light soiling on back, a 2" closed edge tear in top back hinge, and a little light rubbing on front. The Ballantine "F 724" paperback has a shallow crease in its back cover, but no reading crease in its spine. Its covers and pages are unmarked, with only traces of wear on cover edges and corners, and almost no age toning. As with all Space Age Book purchases, I will ship these books in a moisture proof zip-loc bag, padded in bubble wrap, inside a sturdy box to assure they reach their proud new owner in the same condition as my description.

But eventually, they became known as "Baldies," with another new and terrifying difference: the Baldies were telepathic! From then on they were hated by normal humans, and sometimes hunted like animals. These five stories are the saga of their struggle for survival and their desperate search to find a safe means to give the power of telepathy to humans, so both kinds might live peacefully side-by-side.
