Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. A Fine copy in a Very Good plus unclipped dust jacket with a closed tear to the top edge of the front panel. In The Nonexistent Knight, Agilulf- a knight who is armour only. Ag is part of Charlemagne's army, a shining, titled and tiresome ideal. He has as squire and counterpart a buffoon who is and constantly becomes everything in nature; knight and squire are thus mind and body, or spirit and earth. Agiluf's right to be a knight at all is finally challenged by an outsider's love, and he vanishes, leaving his armour to be filled by a real boy who finally woos and wins the Amazonian nun with whom he had fallen in love. In The Cloven Viscount, the hero has been cut in half in an accident of war. As the bad Viscount, he terrorizes his village; as the good half, he by being too confusedly good. Love again reunites him into that good bad, mind flesh, paradoxical being that is man. The visual images, the playfulness, work well to make it more real.

First UK edition, first impression, with a maquette of the dust jacket for this edition, which comprises the last two stories in Calvino's fantastical "heraldic trilogy". Also included is a draft sketch of the dust jacket for Collins's edition of the first title in the trilogy, Baron in the Trees (1959). All three were first published in Italian. Octavo. Original blue boards, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Together with maquette dust jacket, sheet of card (304 x 205) painted and lettered in purple, brown, and white, with the final design for the front panel pasted down and "Rough design 1961" written in manuscript on verso; and sketch of dust jacket for Baron in the Trees, single sheet (289 x 225 mm) with manuscript notes in blue and black ink, mounted with tape on stiff blue card (305 x 250) with tissue guard, pink order form pasted on rear filled out in pencil. Neat ownership inscription of "Penny Jones 1970" on front free endpaper. Foot of spine and one corner bumped, a few marks on top edge; spine panel lightly sunned with slight crease at foot, unclipped: a near-fine copy in like jacket.
