The first book publication of an essay that first appeared in the magazines Horizons in the UK and The New Republic in the US, "Printed as a Christmas Keepsake for the Typophiles" according to the title page. Prima edizione
First edition in book form of an important essay on political language, which, according to the author, "is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind". Publisher's original stapled grey card covers printed in black. Illustrations by Merrill Snethen. A fine copy. The essay, originally published in Horizon Magazine (Vol. 13, No.76, April 1946) and in abridged form in The New Republic (17th and 24th June 1946) is printed here in book form as a "Keepsake for Typophiles" in an edition of 320 copies (December 1947). Prima edizione
Condizione: Fine copy. 12mo, illustrations, original printed wrappers, stapled as issued. Fine copy. First edition, printed as a Christmas keepsake for the friends of the publisher, of perhaps Orwell's most important essay, reflections on doublespeak, the mendacious misuse of language which Orwell fictionalized in Nineteen Eighty-Four, but which, despite Orwell's analysis, seems to be as popular (not to say pandemic) today as ever. Issued as Typophile Monograph XIX.
