12mo. bound in 8's, pp: viii+1-185,[7], engraved title page with a full page engraving & printed vignette title page, 7pp index and 82 fine large engravings to the text, small worm hole to blank margin of front endpaper, endpapers browned to edges, otherwise very good in an antique style full calf. A good copy of an early and charmingly illustrated work on geometry. Text in French. Sebastien Leclerc or Le Clerc [baptized], 1637-1714, was a French artist from the Duchy of Lorraine. He specialized in subtle reproductive drawings, etchings and engravings of paintings; and worked mostly in Paris, where he was counseled by the King's painter, Charles Le Brun, to devote himself entirely to engraving. Leclerc joined the Academie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1672 where he taught perspective. He worked for Louis XIV being made "graveur du Roi". He also engaged in periodic work as a technical draftsman and military engineer. Leclerc is accounted among the best French artists of the 17th century. He is credited with a remarkable intelligence; a delicacy in engraving the smallest drawings, and grandeur in his treatment of the most lavish subjects. "If there has ever been an engraver who rendered himself celebrated in his profession, and who extended his capabilities beyond ordinary bounds, that is, without fear of contradiction: Sebastien Le Clerc".

1379: "rare".- Vgl.: Cohen-R. 611. Honeyman 1951. Hofer 55: "One of the most attractive little mathematical works ever published. It set a style which might be imitated more often." Sprache: französisch.

Couverture rigide. "One of the most attractive little mathematical works ever published. It set a style which might be imitated more often" (Ph. Hofer, Baroque Book Illustration, p. 32).

Engraved frontis., an engraved head-piece at beginning of the dedication, & 82 full-page engravings in the text. 4 p.l. (incl. frontis.), 41, 139, [8] pp. 12mo, 18th-cent. green morocco, sides panelled in gilt, flat spine gilt, a.e.g. Paris: T. Jolly, 1669 (colophon dated 1668). First edition, and a lovely copy, of this uncommon and influential book, a popular manual for artists and architects. This is "one of the most attractive little mathematical works ever published."-Hofer, Baroque Book Illustration, pp. 14 & 32. The illustrations in this book show beautiful small landscapes in the lower portion of the image, while the upper portion shows geometrical diagrams; many are animated by figures (peasants, soldiers, noblemen in contemporary costume). Leclerc's style of illustration strongly influenced the 18th-century French vignettists, prefiguring the grace and elegance of the best French rococo. Le Clerc (1637-1714), a native of Lorraine, adapted the technique of his countryman Jacques Callot. Professor of geometry and perspective at the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences, Le Clerc also worked for Louis XIV as "graveur du Roi." Fine copy.
