Clean, unmarked pages. 275 pages, 19 cm. Arthur O. Lovejoy (1873-1962) was a leading philosopher, historian of ideas, and public intellectual in the first half of the twentieth century. He is perhaps best known today for his role in establishing the principles of academic freedom (through his work in founding the AAUP) and for founding the Journal of the History of Ideas. He was Professor of Philosophy at Johns Hopkins from 1910 to 1938, and continued to write and be active in the History of Ideas Club until his death in 1962. From 1915 to 1940 he was second in stature within American philosophy only to John Dewey, and while he is mainly studied today by intellectual historians, his early work on pragmatism and philosophy of mind follows an analytic method that has aged quite well. The Great Chain of Being (1936) remains an acknowledged classic in the history of ideas.

Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good+. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good-. 1st Edition. 275pp. No editions, printings or number line cited: presumed first printing. Lectures I-VIII. Index, pp. 267-275. Green cloth with white lettering on spine; tan endpapers. Light sunning along upper edges, across spine ends, and on inside top edges flush with top of text block; light sunning on front cover so as to suggest book had been left sans dw next to a tall rectangular book end. Odd minor, small edge wrinkling down left spine edge along middle of book for 2 1/2", but NO impact on dustwrapper at corresponding location and NO impact on integrity of binding (still tight). Bump to rear cover top left corner leaves small fabric wrinkles and 1" slope to cover corner (on the diagonal), with echos from back cover to 2/3 of way to front of text: occurs on upper corner margins, so NO text printing is affected or creased; corner still remains essentially square, as do lower corners (not bumped); top right front cover corner gently curled: because of the precision here, the book describes worse than it is, in any case: A good solid copy. Shiny dustwrapper price-clipped, with small black and white photo-portrait of author smoking his lit cigarette in cigarette holder, look out upon reader. Small wear at lower corners with wrinkling for 3/4" down top right front cover corner edge (got jammed, with small piece chipped away); small wrinkling (jammed) at top rear cover left corner; teeny tears at upper and lower right corners of spine: again: describes much worse than it is: now in mylar which forgives sins gladly. No previous owner names. Clean text.
