Libro
Soft cover. Condizione: New. The development of the fur trade, the European struggle for its control, and the involvement of Native Americans are discussed. Acting as middlemen for the colorful European trappers and traders who arose during this period, the Native Americans controlled the fur economy while Britain and France feuded. During this time the Hudson Bay Company came to prominence, squashing its smaller competitors. France ultimately lost the struggle for control and forfeited her empire in North America, while the British temporarily gained all. (2001), 2004, 51/2x81/2, paper, indices, biblio., maps, 126 pp.

Prima edizione
First edition. First Edition. Cloth. XI.-301pp. Profusely illustrated throughout, many in color. Historical Introduction & Annotation by Thomas Vaughan. Ethnographic Annotation by Bill Holm. This handsome volume was produced to support a joint exhibition by the Oregon Historical Society and the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University. When explorers and orders first visited the Pacific Coast of North America they found a rather sophisticated Indian culture willing to trade "Soft Gold", the valuable animal pelts and hides. As part of the trade interaction, European traders also acquired from the Indians "Objects of Unique Artistry". This work presents a photographic history of the objects involved in the development of the trade. An attractive and important record. A fine, bright, tight copy. Dust jacket shows some minor rubbing to the edges.

Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. First Edition. 301 pages. Bibliography. Gorgeous illustrations throughout, many in colour. "The exhibition which was produced in conjunction with this publication was presented jointly by the Oregon Historical Society and the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University. All ethnographic artifacts are drawn from the holdings of the Peabody. Although many of these artifacts are among the finest of their kind in the world and well known to scholars and visitors to Harvard, few of them have been seen by the public at large. Other non-ethnographic objects shown in this volume and in the exhibition are drawn from the holdings of the Oregon Historical Society and significant collections throughout North America and around the world." - from copyright page. Book clean, bright and unmarked with minimal wear. Rubbing to dust jacket which is now preserved in a glossy new archival-grade Brodart cover. Small bookseller's label inside front board. Very nice copy overall.
