El nivel se suma así a la serie de palas, poleas, balanzas, afiladores, ruedas de bicicleta y paletas de albañil que pueblan la poesía de Seamus Heaney quizá como ninguna otra visitada por el esfuerzo físico y la presencia de un componente laboral. Por otra parte, sugiere una esfera meditativa, íntima, acaso religiosa; un "nivel espiritual" donde la diferencia de "altura" entre las cosas tiende a igualarse y a revelar el peso peculiar de cada una. Ambos sentidos, entrelazados, signan los poemas del libro en su conjunto: poemas que a partir de un objeto, o una experiencia, o desde la anécdota de una leyenda mística, combinan la reflexión con la plasticidad, el pasmo con lo consuetudinario.
