Spine faded and slightly frayed, hinges slightly tender. Slight foxing, some wear and use, good only. This is the second in R.S. Surtees' nine-novel series of fox-hunting novels. "Mr. Jorrocks, having for many years maintained his popularity, it is hoped that, with the aid of the illustrations, he is now destined for longevity. The Author, in the present edition, not being tied to space or quantity, has had a better opportunity of developing his sporting hero hero than before. The reader will have the kindness to bear in mind, that the work merely professes to be a tale, and does not aspire to the dignity of a novel." London, October, 1854. .

(Hardcover, 1961). (1853) 1961 reprint of 1853 edition. Small 8vo (119 x 181mm). Ppxvi,580. Colour plates and b/w illustrations by John Leech. Red cloth, spine titled in white. Slightly cocked and used else good-plus in like dust-wrapper. This is the fifth in R.S. Surtees' nine-novel series of fox-hunting novels. "The author gladly avails himself of the convenience of a Preface for stating, that it will be seen at the close of the work why he makes such a characterless character as Mr. Sponge the hero of his tale. He will be glad if it serves to put the rising generation on their guard against specious, promiscuous acquaintance, and trains them on to the noble sport of hunting, to the exclusion of its mercenary, illegitimate off-shoots." November 1852. .
