In dem vorliegenden Band erzählt der Autor, wie er die letzte Lektion erhielt. Während Don Juan bislang die Beweise seiner Kraft in seiner Geburtsregion, den Wüsten und Mezas - in einem Landstrich mithin, zu dem er so natürlich gehört wie Strauchwerk und Gestein -, zelebriert hatte, so kommt es jetzt zu einer Begegnung in einer ungewohnten Umgebung: Auch in der Stadtwelt, in den überfüllten, geschäftigen Straßen, vermag Don Juan seine Kraft zu beweisen und die Wahrnehmung des Autors auf magische Weise ins Unermeßliche zu steigern. - Carlos Castaneda (* 25. Dezember 1925 oder 1931 in Cajamarca; 27. April 1998 in Los Angeles) war ein US-amerikanischer Anthropologe. International bekannt wurde Castaneda durch mehrere von ihm veröffentlichte Bücher. In ihnen berichtete er, dass er im Rahmen seiner Studien über die Indianer Mexikos und deren Gebrauch von Heilkräutern und Heiligen Kräutern (beispielsweise Peyote), einen Yaqui-Indianer namens Don Juan Matus" kennenlernte. Im Gegensatz zu allen Castaneda angeblich bis dahin bekannten wissenschaftlichen und religiösen Welterklärungsmodellen, vermittelte Don Juan Matus ihm eine alternative Sichtweise von Wirklichkeit (separate reality). In den 1970er und -80er Jahren erlangten Castanedas Bücher internationale Popularität. Innerhalb der sogenannten New-Age-Bewegung spielten sie eine wichtige Rolle. Inwieweit Castanedas Schilderungen authentisch sind oder die Grenze zur Fiktion überschreiten, wurde seitens des Autors nie genau geklärt. In der Ethnologie wird davon ausgegangen, Castaneda habe seine beschriebenen Erlebnisse erfunden. Castaneda lieferte nie wissenschaftlich haltbare Beweise für die Bestätigung seiner Feldforschungen, sein Werk ist deshalb wissenschaftlich nicht anerkannt. Lehren des Don Juan Matus: Eine Aussage, die hinter den Lehren des Don Juan" in Castanedas Werken steht, lautet: Der Mensch und die Welt, die ihn umgibt, ist ein unergründliches Geheimnis, und nur wer den Weg des Herzens" geht und immer seinem Herzen folgt, kann den Weg des Kriegers beschreiten, sein Bewusstsein erweitern und seine Lebensenergie effektiver nutzen. Dies geschehe, indem nach und nach eine Umverteilung der Lebensenergie vorgenommen würde, ihre Quantitäten aus unsinnigen Handlungen immer mehr abziehend und das frei gewordene Potential in konstruktive Aktivitäten investierend. Die wichtigsten Praktiken in diesem Zusammenhang sind: Das bekämpfen des Gefühls der eigenen Wichtigkeit", Den Eigendünkel ablegen", Den Spiegel der Selbstbetrachtung zerbrechen", die Selbstbetrachtung, der Eigendünkel und das Gefühl der eigenen Wichtigkeit sind nach Meinung der Zauberer Eigenheiten, die die Energie des Menschen binden und ihn daher schwächen. Da nach Don Juan das Wesen der Dinge aus solch fließender Energie bestehe, scheint das Kriterium zur Beurteilung von Sinn und Unsinn ihr selbst immanent zu sein. Laut Castaneda wurde dieses Wissen von den Schamanen/Zauberern aus dem präkolumbischen Mexiko von dem Volk der Tolteken überliefert. Durch diese von Castaneda weiter vermittelten Einsichten in die Eigenschaften des menschlichen Bewusstseins und der Bewusstheit alles Lebenden erfährt der Mensch von der Möglichkeit der Freiheit. Erreichbar sei diese, wenn er eine Lebensweise annehme, die als Weg des Herzens oder Weg des Kriegers bezeichnet wird, wobei diese Lebensweise oberflächlich betrachtet ähnliches erreichen möchte wie der Zen-Buddhismus, bspw. das Anhalten des Inneren Dialogs.
